Declining under current leadership

Pros

Working level staff are generally very smart and very competent

Cons

Constant restructures, good performance is rewarded with more work while poor performance is ignored, leadership lack authenticity and generally seem clueless, constantly under resourced and current restructure is causing a mass exit of talented staff who have enough of all the cons, compared to other areas of the civil service they will rip all they can out of you and then look like a deer in the headlights if you dare to ask to be paid for it. They rely on goodwill of staff to work more than they should to keep market afloat

Stagnation at all levels

Pros

Depending on your manager you can have a decent work life balance.

Cons

No opportunity to progress either in salary (been on basically same wage for 3 years) or L&D. They prefer to hire externally and pay consultancies exorbitantly but balk at the idea of providing advancements for current staff. You'd need to jump through a dozen hoops to try and justify a couple of percent pay increase (which will get blocked) but pay millions to agency, contractors and consultancy firms. Currently going through an OD change which will put staffs development in the hands of a small group of people (some of whom have no interest in developing staff) and just see us as a number in a resource pool.

Restructure overload

Pros

Flexible working. Great office location. Autonomy in role.

Cons

No appreciation unless you’re one of the favourites. Keep telling you they’re listening but not taking any of it on board. Way too many restructures and upheaval with little actual change to the way we all work.
