Pros

OK to get your foot in the door as a first job. You get to/have to wear multiple hats.

Cons

This is the startup they warned you about. Everything is for show...there’s a huge focus on appearances but very little substance. The CEO micromanages every detail yet consistently fails to deliver on promises. The “beautiful Gastown office” is actually a tiny, awkward work-live space that feels more like a friend’s apartment than a professional office. Salaries are well below market, and the company will try to substitute stock options for fair compensation. Upper management is dominated by family and friends, leaving no room for growth or advancement. Employees are expected to bring their own laptops, and team events are cheap, inconvenient, and more about optics than actual engagement. Work is frequently nitpicked over minor spacing or typos, while substantive feedback and guidance are absent. This is not a place to build a career.

Pros

Great team members who are collaborative and fun to work with, lots of opportunity to try new things, nice office, really nice customers, had a great manager but felt bad that she was overworked and that I didn’t have as much time to work closely with her.

Cons

Did not really do what I was hired to do because there was always lack of resources and support; very little career development opportunities due to the team being constantly stretched and what seemed like poor business planning or changes in company direction; did not like how other employees were treated by the leadership, which made me uncomfortable to work with them directly.
