Pros

Great Pay and benefits, far superior to thier competitors. Fantastic leadership team who cares about the company, customers and its employees . Ultra modern office environment and if there are any profits they do not go to a shareholder but rather the community (unfortunately it has been a few years since a profit has been made though).

Cons

Changes are needed in PBCs cost structure to survive as they compete against companies who have outsourced everything to India and the Philippines. Despite the benefits for the unionized employees being more generous than the Management teams benefits, CUPE is misleading it's membership to think management is trying to strip away thier benefits. CUPÉ being primarily a public service union doesn't realize that the more they try and push business away the less high quality jobs there are for its members (unlike government). Really sad situation they put thier membership in and I hope it's resolved soon. The employees on the picket line are awesome hard working individuals but the silent few are misleading them and it is so unfortunate.

Pros

Great Benefits, flex time, sick, Family responsibility, RSP etc

Cons

Working there for many years and the company and atmosphere was great. But since new CEO there has been a clear divide, trying there best to break the union, and all new management has been clearly focused on only including exempt staff. Since the new CEO has stepped in, the company has been in a clear decline, losing many big clients. Now I heard during there locked out they had issued red lanyards to exempt staff, to divided the employees and start a us against them environment. Just bad for business and image all around. Also heard the CEO is trying to hold the AGM off, knowing full well that a new board will be elected and he will be out. CEO and management are cowards and are hiding to keep power. Bad time to join this company, as the CEO is going to destroy the brand of Pacific Blue Cross. Just sad in every way.

Pros

Nice office environment Nice sized company - people are accessible Good benefits (even if the union's benefits are reduced) Management is approachable

Cons

Management: most senior executives make decisions based more on ego than what seems to be good overall for the organization, clients and employees. Example: assigning high priority to applying for the 'Top Employer' award, which we got, but that was based on human resources filling out an application, and none of the employees were asked their opinion (odd, but true). The CEO, Jan Grude, doesn't interact with staff and isn't trusted as a leader. Union: The union is often militant and unreasonable. They are threatening to strike but are not providing the union members with accurate information about the contract negotiations in order to get the members angry. When you see 'management doesn't realize they need the union to run the company', a more accurate statement would be 'management doesn't realize they need PEOPLE to run the company'. It's not the union that is needed, it's people that are needed. The union complicates a lot at PBC, holds management back from making progressive decisions, and makes the costs higher for clients because of the current unrealistic union benefits. When you see 'PBC is trying to cut our union benefits', one needs to understand that their current benefits are much higher than what most people get today in other companies. The entitlement attitude of the union is frustrating, at best. I wish the union would simply compare what other companies get, rather than turning a blind eye to this.
