Pros

If you're into political science, this is an interesting job with a proximity to the U.S. government that few other nonprofit jobs in DC have.

Cons

This team specifically is run by a group of white women who are VERY exclusive and unkind to people. If you can't make the happy hour after work, expect to be punished immensely over the next week. In my time, I watched all people of color on the team leave in less than a years time. I would be very careful taking a job on this team if you're from any marginalized community. There also are members of the team who actively bully people and management allows it because they're part of the "in-crowd." It all feels very high school and is highly toxic. Unless you enjoy talking about your sorority days or gossiping about other women in the office, or climbing on top of others in order to succeed, I would say this could be a very uncomfortable experience for you.

Not a great place to work

Pros

- Community feel: bagel Mondays, casual Fridays, brownbags with upper-management. - Opportunity to meet/work with full staff. All-Staff meetings. - Opportunity to meet really cool partners, government executives, etc. - Ample professional development opportunities - Trivial tasks can be passed along to interns - Rarely weekend work - Opportunity to book quiet/private work spaces - Building, terrace - Free coffee/tea, treats sometimes - Organized supervising structure - In building convenience store

Cons

- Management does not want to be criticized and is very defensive of feedback. If you choose to criticize, you will be targeted. - Culture is not inclusive and people are regularly ostracized from work cliques. - Work is sometimes awarded based on social skills rather than technical skills. - Once you become known for knowing how to do a tedious task well, you are stuck doing it for everyone. - Content and methods utilized by the Partnership tend to be outdated, just take a look at the website. - Complete lack of diversity and non-acknowledgement from management. Just look at pictures on website, especially of Board of Directors or SAGEs. - A few really narrow people work here and there is no interest in developing them. - The Partnership does not hire many people from local communities, which definitely impacts the culture and our connection to the work. - Pay is not comparable to work - Work life balance - Non-retention of talented people

Toxic culture, people unhappy, poor leadership

Pros

Flexible work schedule. Nice colleagues.

Cons

As you soon as you start working for PPS you realize how unhappy people there are. Staff are stressed and tired. The staff turnover is high. Leadership does not know what they are doing and cannot make decisions. Feels like working for an organization in the 90s, old school, rigid, hierarchical and breeds culture of favoritism and secrecy. HR policies not consistently applied and no consequences of unethical work practices. Not much career growth except for those who are 'liked' by the CEO or Leadership. Access to opportunities, growth and even salary raises is not equitable. PPS is not a diverse organization. There are some improvements as they are trying to hire people from different cultures and backgrounds, but struggle being inclusive. There are a lot of women in the organization and in the management, but leadership does put genuine effort to support and promote people from other backgrounds. Leadership is all white. They have not yet figured out consistent and equitable hybrid working policy too, very slow moving. They need to learn how to practice what they preach to federal government.
