Overworked and underpaid

Pros

The free coffee on shift was enjoyable as was the occasional sweet treat, but one can't help but think if paid a fair wage, these things would be easily attainable as purchases, rather than relying on handouts from an underpaying employer.

Cons

No shift regularity, management has no interest in your progression, some of the worst pay I have ever endured. If your role was ever developed, it was to cover the cracks of their business model which is as follows; mass expansion with a uniform approach with zero regard for individual shop personality. They'll control the playlists you listen to. Management isn't interested in you. The owners will stop by once a week reeking of priviledge, say hello if you're lucky (though don't expect them to know your name) then you'll be pulled aside by your manager the next day who will recite a snarky email about issues with the shop that could have been fixed in approximately 2.7 seconds by the owners themselves, assuming of course that that wasn't beneath them. The social mission is a joke, workers aren’t from prisons, it's kickstart schemes. It's all a branding ploy to entice customers who truly believe they're contributing to something big. Almost everyone I worked with had a degree and came from middleclass backgrounds. I was completely taken advantage of here and sadly, I have no positives about the company except the other poor sods I was stuck in there with.

Pros

- you bond quickly with all the team in your shop because you’re all in the same awful workplace and can’t help but laugh at the company - the team of baristas and front of house are some of the best I worked with through years in the coffee industry. Shame everyone was desperate to leave.

Cons

- total lack of diversity in upper management. The only ex-offender employed at management level did not go through their training, and already had their skill set before being employed. The other ex-offenders are in an kickstarter and are just told to wash dishes. - they hired people for my role with considerably less experience for more money while I was there. They did this with lots of positions, such as barista and front of house, but didn’t put up wages of existing staff who had worked for them throughout the pandemic, keeping their shops open. Upper management really thought staff wouldn’t find out that they were training new staff basic skills with no experience, who were being paid more than them. No pay rises with inflation, just if you get hired more recently they realise they won’t be able to get any applicants on their existing wages. It’s hardly an incentive to work for them long term. -It’s interesting that the only real posits I’ve reviews here are 5 stars from current employees. I can only assume current employees have been told to leave 5 star reviews to get Redemption’s woeful rating up. - The owners are two privately educated white men who have no idea what it’s like to actually live in your hourly wage in London and it’s blindingly obvious to employees. - Wage is disgraceful. - Any upper management who cared about employees and wanted to improve things for them (e.g. listening to employees concerns about 2nd covid lockdown) ended up leaving. - The owners will visit the shops weekly and then send an e-mail with criticism of the team and shop to managers. I served them every week for a year and they had no idea what my name was, yet would criticise every member of the team every week for the minute details. - Upper management once spoke with myself and the shop manager, got out a piece of paper and split it into two ‘good’ and ‘bad’. They then asked us where each member of staff went. This is how they think of everyone, and you can go into bad for tying your apron wrong. They have no interest in training or development. - it’s so stressful to have staff leaving all the time, they should look at why people leave rather than hiring all the time. It would be cheaper for them if they paid people more, but they have no common sense. - they do not care about the social mission. Internally, they refer to it as only their ‘brand’ and ‘branding’. - My mental health and quality of life was so bad working here. The irregularity of shifts means that you can’t even have a hobby. As soon as I got a new job, my mental health and quality of life increased drastically.

Bullying is a real issue in this company

Pros

There is a great mission, and there are some wonderful people that deliver amazing service

Cons

Bullying is the really big problem in this company. The worrying part is that this exists in a workplace that has a mission to help people who are in a vulnerable position in life. The founders completely deny or ignore the existence of such an important issue. It is amazing how deep they bury their heads in the sand.
