Pros

Experience being exploited, so at least you recognize it the next time.

Cons

Hong Gyu Shin, who owns the gallery, comes from a very wealthy Korean family. From what I can tell he wants to make a reputation for himself in New York as a successful gallerist. However, he has expressed clearly sexist and classist views in my presence, treats his employees like servants (he used to have his "gallery director" pick up his dry cleaning), and his artists like employees, and only hires interns who he pays nothing. While his business is mostly in the secondary market, he wants to discover and promote new and emerging artists. But, most artists who he has tried to woo to his gallery recognize that the terms of the contracts primarily benefit him. He exploits his workers and his artists and is absolutely not trustworthy. The work that he shows is all about him and his success. Stay away.

Pros

All your outfits will have that vintage look from all the physical activities here. Oh you are forced to save $ since pay is zero.

Cons

Your work gets very physical. From moving heavy sculptures from his apt to basement, exhibition installation/de-installation , and even installing his collection in Shins personal space. Be ready to paint the wall on high ladder without any safety equipment. Know that the owner does not care about your safety. Greedy, arrogant ny gallery scene and disgusting operation. Sometimes Mr.Shin asks about very sensitive and personal question, which makes him sounds almost homophobic. You do not want to start your career here.. unless you are in an inevitably desperate situation. Those 5 star reviews are coming from the management. they are very much aware of this website and Shin deeply cares about his fake representation. It doesn’t do any good for me to write this, but I just hope no more poor/naive interns will be a victim of this disgusting operation.

Pros

I don't normally write reviews, but I feel compelled to after seeing the clearly fake reviews posted by management. In my time at the gallery, I too was asked to post fake reviews. To prospective interns/employees -- DO NOT WORK HERE. No one is treated with respect except wealthy collectors. As an intern/employee, you are viewed as replaceable and treated as such, even if management tries to woo you with compliments. Sure you may gain responsibility, but it only goes so far on your resume since Shin Gallery is largely unknown in the art world, and you have to pay way too heavy of a price: I and others were harassed, bullied, and put in very dangerous situations. I can't believe I stayed there for as long as I did. Please just trust me on this one and wait for another opportunity, even though it's such a difficult time to get a job in the arts. I also feel compelled to address other parties who might see this page. Artists: you are given surface-level respect, but your work is handled by unpaid inexperienced interns and stored in a disgusting basement. Artists SHOULD NOT work with this gallery. And collectors SHOULD NOT lend work to exhibitions -- unless you want unpaid interns handling your Joseph Beuys and Richard Serra. And by handling, I mean literally carrying up and down stairs and placing in a vitrine, or shoving on a basement shelf among vermin droppings.

Cons

Would give 0 stars if possible. Highly unsanitary and unsafe work environment in which you are subject to slurs, stereotypes, and bullying. No salary, no benefits, no real contract, no HR.
