Pros

1. The domain is interesting. 2. Selfdecode product is doing good so far. 3. Remote work

Cons

1. Science editor who doesn't have any software knowledge is responsible for managing software developers. 2. Junior developers are assigned to manage senior developers. 3. No planning for software development. Science editor suggest what to do and all developers must agree even if it's illogical. 4. Code is very badly written and no one acknowledge it and wants to fix it. 5. No learning. Infact you might have to do operational work more than coding. 6. They try to micromanage and check Hubstaff for your activity and even if you open stackoverflow they ask why the website was opened for long time :D. 7. The job post says 50-70k dollars but they offer max 15-20$ per hour and then don't give enough work to do even 5 hours a day and they say it's full time.

We always appreciate feedback and want to constantly improve. It seems like this review was written by an employee who worked here over 2 years ago. Since then a lot has changed. We changed project managers and we also have an experienced lead developer who manages developers. We have much more planning in place now. Our developers often learn quite a lot and go on to get great jobs later. It is true that we don’t pay for training, but we do for on the job learning. Developers look at stackoverflow all the time and this isn’t an issue. We are against micromanagement. The only time we look at hubstaff is when the productivity of an employee is poor. This allows us to give constructive feedback and let the employee know how to improve. We pay developers based on a mix of factors, including experience, competence, position and other factors. We currently pay our developers anywhere between $40k-70k/yr or $20-$35/hr and there’s anything but a shortage of work. This being said, there is always room for improvement, and we hope to keep improving with time.

Pros

I've been working for SelfHacked for about 6 months now, and so far it has been an overwhelmingly positive experience: >>> Flexible Hours: As long as you're getting work done you can more or less set your own schedule, which is great. >>> Plenty of Autonomy: There are lots of different projects going on, and if you have ideas for or interest in a particular project, you'll often be given a chance to participate in it -- which means you can easily work your way towards specific projects that you're interested in. (This also makes coworkers very pleasant to work with, as company morale is quite high since pretty much everyone is working on stuff that they're personally engaged with.) >>> Good Work is Valued: People who bring value to the company get acknowledged for their good work, and -- in my own experience at least -- this has also been reflected directly in terms of pay, which can be quite generous if you're producing quality work. >>> Opportunity for Advancement: Everyone on the team is always on the lookout for new talent, and is encouraged to provide input on new employees that are worth promoting (for example, I was promoted to an editorial position after writing just 2 or 3 articles; and I've since been joined by several other newcomers who went through similarly rapid rises up the ranks themselves). So if you're good at whatever it is you do, you can count on being recognized for it. I'd also note that it's not true that new employees are asked for "free work" before being hired... or at least, this has never been the case since I've been here. As an editor I work with new writers all the time, and even those (relatively few) whose first writing assignments are deemed unusable for the site still get fully paid for their work (I would know because us editors submit the payment requests for the writers they work with, so I've seen this occur first-hand). So maybe this was the case at some point in the past -- I don't know -- but in any case it's certainly not true now.

Cons

>>> Company staff work remotely from all across the globe; so if you're the kind of person who needs to be in a physical, highly-social work environment, this sort of work is probably not for you (luckily this is not the case for me personally, but nonetheless this might be something worth considering if you're a prospective employee). That said, we do hold regular meetings over Skype, Slack, etc -- but obviously this is not quite the same as interacting with people in person. >>> It's a fairly young company, so it's hard to know for sure what the job will look like several years down the road. However, I mention this more as a bare observation rather than as a negative point per se, as I haven't actually seen anything that makes me doubt the company's future; in fact so far it seems to be well-run and appears to be doing quite well, so I wouldn't say I'm especially apprehensive on this particular point. But I suppose this is something that newcomers may want to consider, depending on their circumstances.

Pros

Working at SelfHacked has been great because it's allowed me the career flexibility I desired while also providing the opportunity to live out my mission to help others. The people working here truly care a lot about helping people take their health into their own hands and providing people with science-backed information so that they can make informed health decisions. Everyone I've worked with at the company has been great and even though we are a fully remote company, I still feel like I've been able to build positive relationships and great connections with my co-workers. I've only been here about 7 months, but already I've seen the company grow a lot, add new features to our products and improve many of the processes in place. I believe that SelfHacked has a great future ahead of it and I'm honored to be a part of it!

Cons

This is a fully remote startup company. If you don't enjoy a fast-paced environment that requires a lot of self-motivation and the ability to take initiative...then this might not be the place for you. If that's the type of environment you thrive in... you'll fit right in ;)
