Working at Strandbags was a challenging experience that left a disheartening impact on me. This seemingly mom-and-pop Australian lifestyle brand, known for its ubiquitous presence and singular product focus, proved to be a frustrating and unproductive environment for someone tasked with modernizing the brand. The overall culture and events I experienced during my tenure were awful. One glaring issue at Strandbags was the lack of effective internal communication and leadership. The leadership team appeared more interested in spreading gossip about customers and coworkers rather than fostering innovation and growth. Despite being encouraged to bring proactive ideas and strategies to the table, employees, including myself, were often ignored, if not openly mocked. It was disheartening to witness (despite the team's suggestions) the company stick to a single, inflexible strategy: relentless and erratic sales promotions. This approach created a sense of chaos and unease, with employees unfairly bearing the brunt of the blame when things inevitably went awry. The workplace culture at Strandbags was undeniably hostile. Leaders perpetuated a derogatory attitude, often referring to their customers as "geriatrics." This toxic outlook seeped into their treatment of employees. Bullying, manipulation, and gaslighting were prevalent, leading to a complete lack of team morale. I personally experienced gaslighting in the form of misleading, anxiety-inducing emails from HR, initially appearing urgent but eventually leading to delayed informal conversations. This unsettling behavior caused prolonged distress, was not limited to me and was a recurring issue. My last week at Strandbags culminated in a shocking incident, as my manager forced me to watch inappropriate content and subjected me to verbal abuse. When I reported this incident to HR, they failed to take appropriate action, further eroding my trust in the company. In essence, Strandbags appeared to be run by individuals who exhibited sociopathic tendencies, creating leaders who projected their frustration onto their teams. This led to division between departments, passive-aggressive behavior, and a distinct lack of motivation in decision-making. It was baffling to see the resistance to modernization efforts, despite many people being brought in to innovate the brand. My time at Strandbags left me deeply traumatized, and I would not wish such an experience on anyone. The astronomical turnover rate, including high-ranking employees with less than five years of tenure, underscored the deep-seated issues within the company. Many left without new job opportunities, solely to escape the distressing environment. In conclusion, my experience at Strandbags was marred by a lack of leadership, a hostile work environment, and a resistance to change. The company's toxic culture, marked by bullying, gaslighting, and unprofessional behavior, overshadowed any potential for growth and development. It is clear that Strandbags has significant internal issues that need to be addressed for the well-being of its employees and the future success of the brand.
