Pros

The low level workers are amazing. Facilities, maintenance, butterfly garden, hosts, food court, and Security.

Cons

There is no leadership. There are no annual raises. There is no possibility for advancement in your career. There is no feedback on your performance. No social events like Christmas parties or summer picnics. Most of the professional full time staff are condescending to the rest of the employees. They have Master degrees and PhD degrees, and will walk by you in the morning and not even acknowledge your presents. They will fire you on the spot without cause, hand you a brown box to clear out your things, and have security escort you out the door. Not advance notice. No written warnings. For being the Museum of play there is no play working there, no fun, just the constant worry that you may be walked out the door by security at any time for no reason.

Pros

- Very good hours for a part time job - nice gift shop discount

Cons

- They want bodies, period. They hire in batches of 20 or so and eventually you come to realize about 6 months later that your the only one from your hire group left because everyone quit or was fired. One day you can be given "trusted employee" type of jobs, and then the very next, fired for making 1 minor mistake. They truly have a 1 strike policy there, and pretty much if a guest complains about you by name, your fired. - break? You get one half hour break, if you work 6 hours. Otherwise you need to ask permission to use the restroom/etc. and it's clearly looked down upon if you want to take a 15 or any other sort of breather. Also, that half hour break is usually eaten up halfway just in the time it takes to go from the museum to the employee locker space and back again. - If you make the mistake of making a helpful suggestion, such as suggesting that there be an extra host in X exhibit, or that there be another walkie talkie in another, you'll be scolded despite being told before that ideas are welcome. - It's pretty stressful work for min wage; it is truly nonstop. The mini wegmans is one of the 9 circles of hell.

Pros

Co-workers are nice Relatively easy work days

Cons

During the interview and training process, it seems like The Strong is going to be a really great place to work. Everyone is happy and talks about how much they love working there (this is coming from full-time upper management). Then you start work. My first day after training, which was just being shown around the museum and completing paperwork, I was put on the floor and told to starting cleaning up. The managers seemed stressed out because they were understaffed (a common occurrence) and rushed to explain things. It took me almost 2 and a half months to be fully trained in each area of the museum. During the interview process, the managers made it a point to say that they were flexible with scheduling and accommodating for other jobs, but they kept putting me on the schedule for 5 shifts a week (after I had requested 3 or 4) and acted surprised when I brought it up month after month (this happened for my first three months). Despite saying they are flexible, because they are understaffed, they will put you on the schedule for as much as they can so they don't have to hire more people. You also only get a 30 minute break if you work for at least six hours. Otherwise no break. Not even a ten minute break. You can call over the radio and ask for a moment "off-stage" but that is a two minute bathroom break or to refill your water bottle. Lastly, all the people hired most recently were hired for specific schedules. The other employees could hand in monthly availabilities and time off requests, but the new employees had to speak with managers about scheduling issues and asking for time off. Didn't really seem fair to treat the new people differently.
