Pros

I preface this review by saying the product is genuinely very interesting, The industry and implications of the space are compelling, and I learned a lot during my time here. The work is certainly challenging and unusual.

Cons

I worked at virtual facility for over a year before I departed. It recently came to my attention that they were voted as one of the best places to work at in 2021. This is an incredibly far departure from my experience, so I am sharing this here as an honest reflection of my time with them. That said, it was very poorly managed. Upper management holds a tight fist over every aspect of product development, so at every stage of my time here, I had my decisions questioned and I never felt that I was trusted to do the job I was hired to do. I was once asked to work on a weekend and made to felt inferior that I wasn't. Additionally, the CEO touted "unlimited PTO" as a benefit but then complained when I took time off, despite the fact that I delivered more than my share of my team's work. This place is a total dictatorship. Pushback and constructive criticism with regards to process efficiency, team morale, or culture were seen as negative and it was extremely frustrating and exhausting working here. You will be gaslit, berated, and restricted here with no promise of professional development. Take note that a significant number of employees have come and gone through Virtual Facility's doors in a short period of time - this should be warning enough.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback on your time at Virtual Facility. It’s important for us to hear what we are doing well and what we can improve upon. I’m very happy to read that you found your time working on the product interesting, challenging, compelling, and that you learned a lot while you were with us! We strive to work on hard problems with big impact, which inevitably can result in some of the cons you shared. I’ll address each head on: You shared that you felt the product development team was poorly managed. I do imagine that much of this lack of direction you felt may have been a result of our fast-moving startup reality, and that’s not for everyone. While we strive to provide a good work-life balance (and other reviews have commented on this), the rare weekend fire needs to be handled promptly. If you felt this way while you were with the company, it would have been super helpful to bring this up in a conversation so that we could address what you thought needed reworking during your tenure. You also write that you didn’t feel that you were supported with our PTO policy. Our PTO plan was revamped in 2021 (perhaps after your departure) to institute mandatory PTO minimums, meaning everyone on the team must take time off (currently a minimum of two weeks per year), and in addition we all take off for about a dozen all-company holidays per year. Note that this is a minimum, not a cap; we want our team to take the time they need to recharge and fresh their minds, bodies, and spirits. Of course, if you need additional time beyond those allotted periods, we’re always supportive of you taking it as long as you’re hitting your goals. We strive to be a very transparent organization, and believe transparency is a two-way street. We share details about the company with the entire team that many other companies do not, which we believe provides a level of trust, ownership, and mutual respect above and beyond the norm. If at any time you felt otherwise during your tenure, it’s best to bring that up with your supervisor so we could make any necessary adjustments. Building a company is hard work, and it takes a dedicated team to do it well. Thanks again for your feedback; it’s very much appreciated.

Pros

Vision for product is decent. The Dev team, Customer Success Team, and Sales Team are really talented people.

Cons

I'll keep it simple. There's a slew of problems around product market fit and pricing vs. value provided to prospective customers and almost all leadership decisions are made behind a dark veil. This compounds to the existing problems in a way that is VERY bad for business. Still opportunity but before committing to this opp study the industry thoroughly and understand what it's like to work for this stage of startup.

Pros

- open-minded leadership that has decades of subject matter experience - unique opportunity to create empathy-driven UX designs for users that are hungry for change and agency - relaxed work environment with reasonable work-life balance - great benefits for a startup - opportunity of wearing many hats and have your voice heard - company is treating accessibility as first class citizen in product development and design - the product is "literally" (even-though indirectly) saving lives

Cons

- minor tech debt, but well on track to create a scalable component library. - startup growing pains, the team is ambitiously working on making the office less scrappy

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback on your time at Virtual Facility. Feedback is a two-way street and we're happy to see your comments here. I’m not sure I’d go so far as to claim we’re saving lives, but we’re certainly solving interesting problems, and I suppose supporting facilities management teams in the critical healthcare space certainly does come close! I’m very happy to read that you found contentment and excitement in your role, benefited from our efforts around work-life balance, and enjoyed the startup default of “wearing many hats.” That’s not a reality everyone is comfortable with, but it is indeed relevant at a company of our stage. Similarly, there are always things to improve, and I hope you provided this feedback to the team as well during your tenure. We revamped our benefits in 2021 to better-support the growing team, and rolled out a 401k (Traditional and Roth) and other benefits to that end. Thanks again for your feedback!
