Pros

There is never a dull day at WCIA. You could be covering a tornado, ice storm or fire from day to day. There is a lot of opportunity to be creative, but you are very busy and need to be able to multitask. If you have a lot of passion for news and for creativity this my be a job for you.

Cons

The most important thing to the management at WCIA is to get something on the air. It may not be the most elegant, or even the most beautiful story you've ever put together, but as long as it fills the time you were assigned they will be pleased. If at all possible try to not get on the weekend shifts, your peers will become your superior. There are many times that you will be sitting around waiting for something to pan out and then have to rush to get what you do have to air. You are expected to a lot of work for very little recognition and without too much guidance/direction. There were plenty of times I was simply told to go get a story. As a photographer, the most import thing to me is beauty in the shots and how they tell a story. Unfortunately a lot of the work you do will be on the air for all of 20-30 seconds and never seen again. I find it interesting that we were expected to drive as far as an hour away (each way) for maybe 2-3 minutes of air time on a regular basis.

Pros

Lot's of hands on experience See what a newsroom is like first hand Fast paced work environment They will work with your schedule if you have a job or are a college student Close to campus

Cons

Drama between employees is frequent and not kept private. Seems like only men are hired from internships/promoted through ranks quickly They make you do a lot of grunt work Not willing to teach and don't like when you ask questions
