Pros

The quarterly cash bonus was really good in the golden age of Winton, but reduced performance has pushed these down. The offices are well-maintained and the canteen is free.

Cons

Toxic culture, no trust, limited career opportunities, constant reorganisation. Winton feels like a tired company trying to recover its former glory purely by focusing on PR. For various reasons there has been very little yield from its huge research efforts outside of blog posts and internal powerpoint presentations. As a result, it feels as though Winton’s early advantage in data-driven approach has been eroded. There is a negligible amount of meaningful communication from the clique of managers directly around the CEO to the rest of the organisation. This leads to paralysis in large parts of the company, and high levels of ambiguity and waste. While token efforts have been made recently, no amount of fancy graphics compensate for a coherent strategy. The Founder/CEO is unquestionably intelligent, but allows himself to be influenced by people more adept at flattery than leadership. The inner court spends most of its time working out how to stay on the right side of the CEO, and will never knowingly contradict his presumed views. This structure leads to a significant lack of trust throughout the organisation. Objectives are unclear and huge amounts of ambiguity means that nobody is willing to use initiative or take risks. Few can relate to claims on the website that Winton looks after its people; there are countless examples of well-regarded colleagues randomly disappearing without any warning. Statistically, in any given year, you’re more likely to get fired than receive training. Lots of the brightest people have left over the last couple of years or are actively looking elsewhere. For a long term strategic systematic investor, there is a surprising absence of long term strategy or systematic thinking. The environment is truly toxic. If you have always wondered what it felt like to live through Stalin’s purges, I can honestly recommend a spell at Winton Capital.

Toxic environment fuelled by fear

Pros

- Free umbrella's. - Interesting lectures by academics and notable people available to all. - Hammersmith is an unusual area for the head office.

Cons

-Environment of constant change was exhausting and without business justification. -20 question review given to all employees as their only feedback mechanism from their manager once per year. Poor fit for most employees and not tailored to the role or department of the employee. This perhaps perfectly demonstrates the level of thought given by the CEO to employees in his firm (he wrote all the questions - including my favourite 'Does this person work hard?') - 'Build not buy' attitude to software has left an unsustainable maintenance and support legacy. -Refusal to employ contract staff (in any department other than the siloed data crunching pit in Oxford). This inhibits new techniques and ideas, majority of staff have only ever worked at Winton. Difficult to get anything other than the 'Winton way' approved. -All decisions are made by the CEO, even hiring of a junior analyst, there seems to be a real lack of trust from the CEO even in senior management. This filters down through the company. -No working from home opportunities (see above - no trust). Happy for employees to have remote access in order to be continually contactable and able to extend the working day often through the weekend, when it suits Winton. -Free food = weight gain and a feeling of being trapped, no reason to leave the office. -Free private GP - over medicates strong drugs for minor ailments. Prescribing sleeping tablets seemed to be commonplace and indicated to me an unhappy, stressful work environment.

Avoid at all costs

Pros

Used to be a wonderful place to work - interesting, collaborative, challenging, with some genuinely impressive people to look up to. However they have now all left. Free food and nice offices Bonuses have been good at times In-house doctor is great

Cons

Constant and sudden change, firings, teams being dismantled and moved around, people being promoted one second and demoted the next with no explanation. Employees have no security, and no trust or confidence in the future. Senior management, including David Harding, will talk very negatively about other senior management, publically and in front of junior employees. Management will spend huge sums of money on private planes and away days, but then cut basic benefits for other staff. Real feeling that everyone apart from senior management is expendable, and that they want you to know that
