This is Lylybell Teran—a returning #GEMFellow intern from our partnership with The National GEM Consortium. The GEM Fellowship program supports underrepresented students pursuing degrees in the areas of engineering and science. Lylybell is majoring in #DataScience at Columbia University and is supporting the #MachineLearning team in our #OpenInnovationCenter. Lylybell believes that many of the biggest challenges facing society today require solutions that will be developed in the #STEM fields. Driven by her desire to meaningfully contribute to developing these solutions, Lylybell chose to study data science. In her free time, Lylybell likes to knit, paint, and dance. She is also a part of Columbia’s hip hop dance team. Introducing Mitchell Thompson, a 22-year U.S. Air Force #veteran and the lead data scientist/data engineer at Riverside Research. Mitch is responsible for developing and deploying the Commercial Innovations Center’s data strategy for all spatiotemporal datasets. Mitch’s military career spanned various global locations, including Somalia, England, Saudi Arabia, Kosovo, Hawaii, Nigeria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He began his career as an airborne radio operator specializing in high frequency, ultra-high frequency communications. His role evolved into strategic, long-haul communications where he was responsible for exchanging status updates with Special Air Missions, including the prestigious Air Force One and other high-ranking dignitaries. Shortly thereafter, Mitch’s career broadened into geospatial intelligence supporting tactical and national level missions. Mitch earned countless accolades and awards while in active duty. Upon his retirement, he served for five years as a USAF Civil Servant and continues to be involved in the following veteran organizations: Air Force Sergeants Association; Team Red, White, and Blue; Veterans in Data Science & Machine Learning; and Veterati.
