Johnny Mukwa’s artwork, titled Aki miiniwaa Noodin Niizh-Manidoo (Two Spirits, Earth and Air) represents the idea of two-spirit people in Anishinaabe culture – a pairing of contrasting animals, like the bear and the hummingbird. We commissioned this piece in honour of #IndigenousHistoryMonth and #Pride in Canada in June. Johnny Mukwa is a Woodland artist of mixed Anishinaabe and Métis descent from Thunder Bay, Ontario, who currently works and lives in Nelson, British Columbia.
