How are the career development opportunities at Brandeis University?

No qualifying exams which is nice. The health insurance is really good.

The classic PhD experience: incredibly toxic advisors who overwork their students to the bone while the department pretends nothing is happening. The total stipend is a joke and is far below any reasonable cost-of-living estimate. Funding is extremely opaque: officially we are entitled to five years but depending on one's advisor significantly more might be available. The department does nothing to harmonize conditions across advisors. Requirements for what constitutes meaningful research progress are extremely vague and vary a ton from advisor to advisor. The TA requirements are high: by default default we are supposed to TA every semester, even in our final year when we are on the job market. Some students get out of it by being funded by grants. The details of this are never explained to students. The department is completely focused on Master's level students and provides next to no help in terms of career growth. PhD students are frequently left out of events that talk about job opportunities.

Flexible hybrid schedules and opportunities for professional development. Good work environment that facilitates persona; growth and connections.

Pay is moderately low for the area.

Great opportunities for research, offers opportunity for skills development with different workshops, guest lectures, and free (fully reimbursed for cost) class per semester with supervisors approval.

University leadership and bureaucracy have created challenges such as layoffs of staff, staff are not valued and treated as disposable, low pay compared to other universities and non-profits, speaking to other research staff they have not gotten raises in years (annual increase used to be cost of living adjustments, now they are merit increases and do not necessarily keep up with cost of living).

The managers in the office I worked in were super friendly, very understanding when life situations came up that required me to be absent, and encouraged employee development. Everyone I spoke to really enjoyed their job at Brandeis, and, as a result, the office culture, even among my co-workers, was positive. Excellent benefits also.

There was not much growth opportunity.

Brandeis has a great culture in general, is humanistic (generous benefits package and time off if you need it), and is generally stable and conducive to work-life balance. Staff are allowed tuition stipend for those who want to take classes.

Slow growth in career. Most coordinators I know did what I did which is get their work / academic experience there, then leave for real growth. The promotion process from within is glacial (if there's movement at all) and there is a huge bias towards certain groups. If you fall outside those groups and want to better yourself career-wise, the best thing to do is leave.
