      Business Analyst Interview

      3 Nov 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon in Oct 2023

      Interview

Phone Interview- One Amazon leadership question and 4 SQL queries Loop/Final Interview- with 5 different people, 3 team members, 1 Hiring manager and 1 bar-raiser. Amazon leadership questions, product-related questions, and 6 SQL query

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The phone interview went really well in which the interviewer asked one Amazon leadership question, some follow-up questions, and then 4 SQL Queries. The final interview was rescheduled one hour before which was disappointing and the interviewer asked more than 15 questions (it was exhausting in a one-hour phone call with more than 15 questions and also shuffled sometimes technical and then again Amazon leadership it should have done in sequence), including Amazon leadership, tableau, questions like if sales churn is 5% what can be the cause and similar product-related questions. For the Amazon leadership question, I answered one question that was not related to business analysis but it was relevant to the question like how you handled difficult customers so the interviewer asked me to give another example that relates to BA but as I had worked previously as an IT analyst were I had to handle difficult customer I gave that example using STAR method but she didn't accept that answer so basically Amazon just expect you to create a story using STAR method no matter if you have actually worked on that just give position related examples then you are good or they reject you, I didn't like this concept. Similarly in the last round of the interview, the person who was shadowing even he asked some questions which I answered correctly but HR had given a heads-up that I would see another person too but they would not ask any questions they were only for shadowing then why that person even asked the question. It was very confusing one time the other person asked me to write SQL queries and before completing the other interview/shadowing asked about Amazon leadership, they should have first let me finish the SQL part, also the leadership question was already covered in the first half of the call but again they asked when I was working on SQL. I worked really hard for this interview for almost a month so even the company should value the candidate's time and should have a systematic approach to the interview process, and question sequence. Also in 20 minutes how can you write 6 Medium-level SQL queries in that too again asked leadership-related questions finally at the end time was already over and I could solve only 4 SQL queries. I regret for giving so much time for this interview.

      Interview

The interview process includes a SQL test, an initial recruiter call, and a final five-round loop featuring technical questions and discussions focused on Amazon leadership principles with different team members.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked a key question focused on both technical depth and culture fit: how you apply your skills to solve real problems, along with examples demonstrating alignment with Amazon’s leadership principles.

I applied online. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA)

      Interview

Interviewed for Business Analyst role at Amazon and honestly the process felt exhausting and impersonal. The interviewers seemed far more focused on checking boxes against the 14 Leadership Principles than actually understanding the candidate or having a genuine conversation. Almost every question was another version of a STAR behavioral scenario, even when it barely related to the actual role. The process felt extremely rehearsed and rigid. There was little effort to make the candidate feel comfortable or valued, and it often felt like they had already decided the outcome before the interview even started. Technical and analytical depth barely mattered compared to how perfectly you could package stories into Amazon’s preferred format. If you don’t have polished STAR stories memorized for every possible situation, the process can feel unnecessarily difficult and draining. Overall, one of the most mentally exhausting interview experiences I’ve had.

      Interview

The basic STAR format, but the team was not clear about what they were looking for. The recruiter was not very responsive and took a long time to schedule the calls
