The experience was, by far, the most excruciatingly abusive and unprofessional interview process I've ever been through. I was subjected to 6 interviews over a period of 4 months with several last-minute cancellations. The last interview was rescheduled 3 times, often on the same day and once after I'd set out for the office. Altogether, the process showed a total disregard for my time and displayed all the signs of a startup office still getting their act together, although I have worked with startups that were better organized. For an office in Nigeria, only one of my interviewers was African, which among other things, goes to show how much of the day-to-day is still run out of Joburg. At one point, I was asked for my previous payslip and an effort was made to strong-arm me into committing to not transfer out of Lagos if I got hired, a disturbingly flawed retention strategy designed to pay consultants below-market rates. I doubt I’m the only candidate to have experienced such Machiavellian maneuvers; they seemed routine. I hope the firm's global top brass take note of such unscrupulous hiring practices, which only reflect poorly on the brand of an otherwise great company.
