I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Capital One
Interview
Contacted via email by internal recruiter.
Phone interview with recruiter - passed.
Moved to phone interview with hiring manager - passed.
Asked to complete a Data Science Challenge within a week of receipt in order to move to the next step. Was informed that passing it was mandatory for all levels up to VP, and if I declined or did not submit, I would be unable to apply for future roles for 6 months. I was also informed that it should be doable within 4-6 hours. I asked to have the challenge sent to me on the following Friday afternoon. Instead, it was sent at 9am Friday morning, which precluded me from finishing it up during the time when I planned to.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
The four questions in the challenge are not disclosable.
The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (New York, NY)
Interview
Total 7 rounds (hr screen, hiring manager, take home exercise, role play, fit, technical and business). After take home exercise, all other rounds were redundant and added ZERO value. To make it worse, I don't think anybody even reviewed the take home exercise because nobody even mentioned it afterwards.
- Combined I spent almost 20 hrs of my time on all rounds. What a waste! I learned nothing from the experience.
- Out of 4 interviewers only 1 bothered to introduce themselves or asked for my introduction. Their goal was to just ask pre selected questions. They did not even leave any time for me to ask any questions.
- While the different rounds were supposed to cover different topics but most were just technical in nature. For example: In business round, I expected them to ask questions about business problems but they asked me to do mathematical calculations on the calculator Excel was not allowed because apparently it will not be fair. Go figure!
- Most interviewers did not seem to have much business or soft skills. I could tell that my answers that included business and strategy elements were not even understood.
- I applied for the leadership position so I expected questions around leadership qualities. Instead, I got questions that were better suited for an entry level data analyst (describe group by). Other questions were so irrelevant that I lost all interest in giving meaningful answers.
- the whole process felt very dry, impersonal, inefficient and thoughtless. I learned nothing and definitely felt that it was a huge waste of time.
