I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Goldman Sachs (Bengaluru) in Jan 2010
Interview
After being referred by employee, I had gotten a call from GS HR who then scheduled a phone interview.
In all 4 phone interview rounds of average 40-45 mins spread over 15-20 days time.
The interviews were conducted from India,London and NY. They were scheduled at convenient timing for me.
Once clearing phone interview rounds, I was called on for 1:1 interview at Bangalore.
There the entire day went in 4-5 meeting/interviews with different ppls from developers to managers and some senior folks. Half of the interviews were technical and some domain/career specific.
The technical questions around Java - Threading, Collections - HashMap (key collisions), MQ message processing, working with large dataset, performance, memory leaks, database indexes (clustered-nonclustered), garbage collection, puzzles.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Goldman Sachs (Hong Kong)
Interview
I went through about 6-7 rounds of interview to meet with 9 interviewers. The first round was a telephone interview who asked friendly questions. More indepth and difficult technical questions would be tested on round 2 onwards, mostly were telephone interview. They would ask which area is your strongest technical skill set and asked questions in that area. In the later rounds of interview, they would go through some management cases with you. They dont need candidate to be an expert in particular technical area but look for a real technie fans (but not computer geek)

I applied through consultant. Got call after 3.5 months. It was for Strats team, so interviews level were tougher. There were 10 rounds with all the senior members of the team. If all the members vote yes for you, then only you get selected, else you are rejected. They go to great lengths to ensure this. Even the Vice-President of the Divison calls you from London, and takes your interview. It was difficult
