      Customer Success Manager Interview

      3 Oct 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Portsmouth, NH
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at HubSpot (Portsmouth, NH) in Aug 2017

      Interview

Applied for the role via a referral from a friend who works for them and he thought I would be a good fit knowing I was in customer services for more than a decade with proven track record of over-achieving my targets. I received an automated email stating they wanted me to do a video interview. I really prepared for it (got Inbound certified, researched the role I applied for, learnt about the company and its culture, etc..). What they call a video interview is not you talking to one of their recruiters or staff via Skype or other video conferencing software but instead you are alone talking to your own webcam while your computer's screen shows questions for one minute and then records your replies for one or two minutes. Questions were not too tricky but it is totally unnatural and impersonal. You see the question for a minute, then you have a countdown and it simply records you for the whole time (one or two minutes, depending on the questions). Although you can click the "stop" button to finish the recording early, I found the whole process cold and dehumanized. The interview was like being psycho-analyzed by your own computer, I felt like I was Rorschach from Watchmen and my monitor was screening me... Anyway, I recorded an answer for each of the three questions only to receive another automated email telling me "Thank you but no thank you". What really feels out of place here, especially applying for a specific customer service and customer relationship building position was the actual lack of relationship. I've been talking to automated systems and gears the whole process. They want you to record something to steal the show and tell them how great of a human being you are, but there is absolutely no human contact in the process. Which is totally wrong. The perfect example of "do as I say, not as I do". The whole process completely contrasts with the company culture they say they are so proud of. The whole thing makes me wonder: if they deal with their potential employees in this cold, dehumanized way that completely lacks empathy and warmth, how do they actually treat their customers and employees?

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

1/_Why did you apply for a role in customer service? 2/_Think about a time you struggle in your job. How did you deal with it and what was the outcome? 3/_Think about a time where poor decisions were made. How did you handle it?

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to write a review and I'm sorry that you didn't feel like you had a good experience. We, like many companies that are growing quickly and hiring a lot of people, use the video interview as a great way to get to know candidates beyond simply submitting a resume, which I would argue is the most impersonal aspect of applying for a job. While it allows us to get ot know candidates in their own voice at scale, you're not the first to comment on how it can feel unnatural, which is why our recruiting team has built out resources for candidates on our blog and through the video interviewing portal itself to help you better prepare for this part of the interview process. It sounds like from your experience we could do more here, so I'll work with the team to see if there are other ways we can help candidates like you better prepare. Thanks again for the feedback. Best, Becky
