I applied to McKinsey as a PhD and went through a three-step interview process. First, I went to Atlanta along with 20-30 other PhD students where we were all given an exam covering basic math and reasoning in a business setting. We were prepped on what the rest of the interview process would look like and paired up with consultants to do mock case interviews in groups of 2-3.
After this I was invited back for one-on-one interviews with two consultants for the second round.
Finally, I was invited to the office I had applied to and interviewed with four consultants. The interviews were all in the same format, 20-minute behavioral/resume and 25-minute case.

Question 1
I was given a case by a very senior consultant that was based on his own experiences. This was the most difficult case as the cues I had come to expect from other interviewers were totally absent.
I applied through university. I interviewed at McKinsey & Company (Gurgaon, Haryana)
Interview
The selection process is rigorous and highly competitive, involving multiple rounds of case interviews along with a personality assessment. Candidates are evaluated not only on their problem-solving and analytical abilities but also on their communication, leadership potential, and overall fit with the organization’s values and culture. The process is designed to identify high achievers who have demonstrated consistent excellence throughout their academic and professional journeys, maintaining strong performance over time rather than relying on isolated accomplishments.”
The interview is structured exactly as the preparation materials describe, i.e. personal fit and case. All interviewers were friendly and supportive. After each interview round I received helpful feedback. The cases are not easy but fair.
