      Software Engineer Interview

      6 Dec 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Oracle (Seattle, WA) in Oct 2019

      Interview

Was contacted via Linkedin by a recruiter to have an initial talk with me. Afterwards we scheduled a phone screen with one of the engineers. The phone screen started with a relatively simple coding question, followed by various data structure/algorithm based questions. The interviewer during this step was very professional, helpful, and did a great job at guiding me to the correct answers when it was clear that I didn't have an immediate answer. Next was the onsite interview. The onsite interview bothered me because half of the interviewers were either on their laptops, or phones typing away while I was walking through and explaining my thought process. Not sure if they were taking notes about me, but either way it felt like they weren't engaged which ended up making the process feel a bit like I was bothering them with their time. One guy even answered his phone in the middle and that really irked me. Also there was a mix up with room reservations which costed some time to sort out... Because the interviewers weren't fully engaged in the conversation, I got the impression that they didn't care, so I feel like I didn't give it my all. My advice for interviewers is to at least treat the interviewees with some respect and attention. The initial recruiter and phone screen were amazing and are the reason why the experience rating overall is not a full on negative.

      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Oracle

      Interview

1 technical phone screen covering basic networking and data structures, followed by a 4-round onsite loop focused heavily on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) scale challenges. The rounds were split between low-level system execution, multi-tenant cloud architecture, and standard relational/non-relational database trade-offs. The interviewers kept drilling into network virtualization, hypervisors, and storage layers. To prep, I needed to brush up on high-throughput cloud networking patterns and storage engine internals. I utilized Apex Interviewer to simulate full cloud infrastructure design problems.

      Question 1

Design a highly secure, multi-tenant virtual cloud network block storage migration system that allows live volume transfers between physical data centers without dropping active I/O operations.
