Telstra – Why Work With Us?

At Telstra, our purpose is to build a connected future so everyone can thrive.

The telecommunications industry is experiencing enormous growth; network traffic is growing faster than any other period of time and digital technology is changing our world. Our people are at the heart of this change – and as Australia’s leading telecommunications and technology company with a presence in over 20 countries, we’re helping to make it happen by connecting people together and to their devices.
Throughout our 100 year history, our people have been at the forefront of technology innovation. More recently, we have the largest Internet of Things network in Australia and are leading the way in 5G. And this is just the beginning of what we’re hoping to achieve together.
A career with us will give you a platform to shape tomorrow through technology. For you, that means helping us to push the boundaries of what’s possible today, and in the future. It also gives you the opportunity to empower millions helping businesses grow, evolve and reach their potential.
At Telstra, you can thrive, your way. We foster new ideas, we embrace different ways of working and thinking, and we believe an inclusive and diverse team will lead us to innovate for the future.
Bring your aspirations, your skills, your talent – and discover how that translates into a remarkable career.
So join us, and together we’ll reimagine the future.

We’re creating a culture that’s more diverse, innovative and collaborative than ever before. It means everyone who works here plays a role in helping us to achieve our strategy and company vision. We all live by our five values; they are:

  • Show you care
  • Better together
  • Trust each other to deliver
  • Make the complex simple
  • Find our courage

These are the values we stand for—the values by which we measure all of our actions.

And our values demand action. Being a values-led organisation means we must have the:

  • Willingness to take responsibility
  • Determination to never think, ‘I have no choice’
  • Humility
  • Desire to learn
  • Courage to challenge ourselves and others when values are not met

We know that we will not achieve our strategy unless we get our values right.

Putting these values into action will help us to build a connected future so everyone can thrive.

We’re passionate about creating an environment that’s inclusive and supportive; a place where everyone can truly be themselves.  We know that diversity fosters greater innovation and better customer connection, and helps our people to thrive.
We welcome people of all genders, ages and ethnicities and focus on fairness and opportunity for under-represented groups like the LGBTI+ and Indigenous communities, and people who identify as living with a disability.
Our Diversity and Inclusion strategy is built around three foundational streams:

  1. Diverse perspectives – Ensuring under-represented people are included in our workforce and their diverse thinking is valued.
  2. Inclusive teams – Creating an inclusive culture where everyone can thrive.
  3. Flexibility and fairness – Flexibility enabled by technology, fair policies and processes.

This means a career with us will see you work with a diverse and talented group of colleagues, who’ll support your development and with whom you’ll achieve great things.

We understand the need to be flexible, to help our people do all the things they love. All Roles Flex is our promise to approach every role which means flexibility is something we’re open to discussing for all jobs – whether that’s working part-time, outside normal business hours, from different locations, or job-sharing.

We’ve adopted a very broad definition of flexibility, recognising it will mean different things for different people and different work types. We also have leave options that include parental leave, cultural leave and career breaks.

We encourage our leaders to manage flexible working by checking in with their team members regularly to see what’s going on outside work. We urge our people to trial new ways of flexible working and to take a guilt-free attitude to flexibility, because it improves productivity, engagement and results for customers.

You’ll thrive your way with Programs designed to help you explore your career options. From Agile methodologies to Human Centered Design, you’ll experience new ways of working that are as immersive as they are flexible.

    Positive Experience
    Average Interview

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Telstra.

    3 step recruitment process:
    1. Online application, resume, cover letter
    2. Coding challenge, recorded video interview, behavioural games
    3. Case study presentation and behavioural interview

A fairly long process but overall very enjoyable.
    - The turnaround time for an outcome was very quick from the first step of the application. All steps within the recruitment process took place within 30 days.
    - Emails from HR were proactive in notifying of delays to outcomes.
This was a great experience especially when comparing to other companies (many others don't notify of delays nor do they even give outcomes quite often).

I had a lady from HR pick up on a mistake I made in my application in the first stage (this initially led me to be rejected). If she hadn't picked up on it, I wouldn't have even got through to the first round. The HR team's attention to detail and willingness to read over all applications (even system rejected applications) was impressive.
HR's responsiveness to emails, and on forums like Whirlpool is definitely also impressive.

The coding challenge was definitely doable - I was unable to answer a question but still progressed to the next stage.

The final interview was made enjoyable because the interviewers and lady from HR were very lovely. They made it a far less confronting experience.
The presentation was based around Telstra - so advice to applicants would be to learn as much as possible about Telstra and always keep the customer front of mine when answering.
After the presentation, the questions were fairly common behavioural questions.

HR then call within a day or so to give feedback on your interview performance - I think this is great but maybe should be done during the interview itself.
They then also ask for your feedback on the recruitment process - it's hard to be honest and give feedback if you're waiting nervously to find out if the interview was successful. Advice would probably be to change this and ask at another point.

I was unsuccessful getting a role but honestly enjoyed the process and would apply to another role.
Piece of advice to HR and interviewers - the feedback call after an interview is great but I received no constructive feedback. It was a little bit disappointing to not be able to be told any areas of improvement but also not receive an offer. Even small constructive feedback would've been helpful.
