I have been working at Telstra full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great pay, flexible hours, many offices around Australia. Usually very chilled working conditions. Overtime is almost non-existent. The problems you face as a programmer can be at a national scale in some cases. Sometimes you get opportunity to work with quite large datasets (not google large but largeish).

    Cons

Technically the company is kind of boring to work for, technical evolution doesn't happen quickly or easily; nobody wants to risk changing the status quo too much. If you stay with the company too long, your skills /will/ stagnate.

Change management is stuck in the 80s.

Communication between teams is minimal. Even visibility of other teams is minimal. I guess because the company is so big, you don't really know what's happening in other teams. There's no visibility upstream or downstream - you can't see anyone else's code.

    Advice to Management

In terms of structure, I would stop building so many layers and try to consolidate and "socialise" the software development efforts. Two words come to mind - fragmentation and isolation. This is different to separation of concerns. What I mean is we've ended up with specialised teams for certain layers, and there may not be anyone with a complete view. Even if someone has motivation, currently it's not even /possible/ for someone from one team to analyse the entire workflow due to this silo-isation.

This kind of structure also breeds political empire building which compounds the technical problem.

So we end up with some really ridiculous bugs that are incredibly hard to get fixed. I worked in T-AAA and I've seen simple things take literally years to solve because of this. It's frustrating and embarrassing.

I don't envy your position. Good luck!

    I worked at Telstra full-time

    Pros

    Flexible working options
    Above average compensation

    Cons

Lack of career progression led to a significant churn of top talent
Most decisions are made based on politics rather than customer data or objective evidence
No consistent strategic vision from management led to a lot of internal conflict
Over-reliance on multiple approvals, legacy policies and dated technology breeds a bureaucratic culture of mistrust that slows decision making and kills innovation or any diversity of ideas

    Advice to Management

More time should be spent with customers rather than office politics and empire building. The rotating door at C Level is evidence of a loss in confidence in the CEO

I have been working at Telstra full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Large organisation that provides opportunities to move around and gain experience in different areas.

    Cons

Has turned from a great company to work for to one that has lost its way. Management is figuring out a way forward but either hasn’t found it yet or is poor at communicating it.

    Advice to Management

Focus on Customers and more importantly your people. Appreciate talent and experience as opposed to treating people as a cost.
