Pros

Cut your teeth on many projects. Super fast paced and lots to do all the time. Lots and lots to do. ALL the time.

Cons

Zero product design knowledge amongst the entire company. Completely run by salespeople and programmers that wouldn't know a decent app if you......... Well, you get the idea.

We value genuine feedback. However I believe this is unfair and untrue feedback. I understand you chose to go and work for a smaller competitor which may have motivated you to write this review to help win business. However in the interest of fact: - Our designers are lead by a Creative Director with 22 years experience in Melbourne, he has lead major organisations and agencies and build world-class work. - We've won multiple design awards (including a W3 award this year) for work at Appster. - We've built multiple multi-million dollar startups - We've been rated top 10 app developers in the world according to 3rd party agency review sites (including clutch, goodfirms etc) I'm sorry your time at Appster wasn't what you expected, however I think the above deserves to be corrected. - Mark McDonald, CEO Appster

Pros

• The team I worked with were excellent • Casual work environment • Decent coffee machine

Cons

• Being a 'culture fit' was far more important that the ability to do your job well. • Remuneration well below industry average. 'Company culture' considered to be a worthwhile replacement. Management expects people to 'do whatever it takes' and yet give the least possible in return. The attitude that seemed to come across was that staff are seen as disposable or easily replaceable. • Vague promises of better rates, employment or career opportunities that were never fulfilled. • For a company that perceives itself as agile and innovative, it was highly resistant to any input. Suggestions on improvement and streamlining of process met with anything between indifference to outright hostility. • As a result, there is a high rate of staff turnover, particularly of skilled and experienced people. • Lack of interest in producing quality products. We were, in fact, told explicitly to avoid any kind of value adding, even if we had time and budget. • People lacking key knowledge and experience making poor decisions to the detriment of projects. • Morally questionable attitude towards clients and potential sales

Hi, Firstly I’m glad you enjoyed our coffee machine, the team and our laid back culture. We have some really awesome people in Melbourne :-) However, I don’t think any company is perfect and we grow we’re always looking to improve. I’m sorry that you feel our compensation and career promises were met. As you were engaged as a contractor in our Melbourne office on a project by project basis it’s hard for us to commit to taking every contractor on as a full-time employee as our hiring is based on client demand. We have taken feedback about contractor rates onboard and have significantly increased them since you did your project at Appster as we received this feedback multiple times. We’re really proud of our relationships with clients and quality, and while every company can do better this is something we track and share weekly NPS feedback scores with our entire organisation. We spent time through automation and manual testing focusing on API, Security, UI, performance/load and a number of types of testing through our test cases. We have over 40 QAs in our organisation. I’m proud that this year we became a top 5 developer on independent review site Clutch.co and recently won a prestigious W3 award :-) Without being privy to the specifics about quality and client management, I’d be happy to have a chat to learn how we can do better. My email is mark.mcdonald@appster.com.au and I’m always free for a coffee or discussion. - Mark

Hi there, Firstly thanks for your positive feedback on our culture and the great people we have. I’m proud of them all in Melbourne! We do NOT have any unpaid interns, though there may be some perception that some of our casual employees (such as overflow receptionists and researchers) are interns. This is something we need to do a better job communicating internally. Compensation is always a tricky thing, but we’ll continue to benchmark our salaries against industry standards and take feedback. If you have any outstanding concerns please feel free to reach out to me any time mark.mcdonald@appster.com.au - always happy to have a chat about how we can improve. Mark
