I have been working at Digital Domain full-time

    Pros

This is a really good place in terms of the quality of people on the floor. Teams are good and easy to get along with, very few egos at play here.

They are very accommodating to people's real life schedules (kids, medical, etc.)

The final result of the work is usually quite good and something to be proud of.

    Cons

For whatever reason, this company struggles to consistently get work, which will hopefully change once their Montreal studio is established and they can offer that QC tax credit the studios are now after. I think this results in them taking on a lot of 911 jobs to fill the gap.

As a contract worker, it can get a little dicey and contract renewals usually come right down to the wire (as in 1-2 weeks) of your end date. Can make it stressful if you are absolutely relying on the income or the employment for PR reasons.

Studio is very low-frills and the desks are set up like a call centre, which makes it a little difficult to get to know people outside of your little pod.

They often hold post-mortems on shows, but I am doubtful that much input from those actually on the floor, dealing with the day-to-day, is actually factored into their decisions. I feel like the mentality is "the show was delivered, no need to fix anything" and a lot of the same issues seem to carry forward from show to show.

    Advice to Management

Management absolutely needs to listen more to feedback from those who are actually on the floor, particularly seniors and leads, who deal with the impacts of their decisions regarding supervisor assignment, promotions, tool development, etc.

On the subject of supervisors: First of all, there are a lot of really good sups at DD, but I feel like there are a lot of promotions to these types of positions that are not done based on merit. What happens is you end up with people in these roles who lack either the technical chops or the people skills to do the job effectively and then the workload trickles downwards and other sups and/or the leads take on a lot more of the burden.

Listen to your artists! Don't make your decisions based on who shows up for drinks.

I have been working at Digital Domain full-time

    Pros

Nothing leaves the facility without looking awesome.
Some projects are extremely high profile.
The level of artistic sensibility and technical knowledge among the artists, TDs and supervisors is impressive.
Pipeline is very robust in all departments.

    Cons

Many of the people who made the company great are leaving, and management doesn't work hard enough to retain them.
Feeling of "team" and "work family" are weaker than in past years.

    Advice to Management

Prioritize your core business--visual effects. Cut loose all the extra ventures. Spend money to get back the great brains who left.

I worked at Digital Domain full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Working with other talented artists
-Pay seems decent or above average
-If you want to work for simply Donuts on Fridays, then you are set

    Cons

-CEO and all senior management lack communication, ideas, and knowledge of how to properly run facility... let alone boost morale.
-Poor/fair benefits: No 401k matching. Substandard health care coverage.
-No parking... unless you are VP/Leadership, in which case even if you have been working at DD for 10+ years, a new hire VP or Supe/Lead will get a parking spot... meanwhile your 10 years of dedication is worthless.
    -Ineffective use of money.
-Lack of notice when letting go contract and even Full time staff (not even a week notice in some cases).
-Human Resources department that does not take seriously complaints about employees in leadership positions that are causing extremely toxic, stressful, and negative environments or that go out of their way to be vulgar to clients... even after multiple employees have reported said offending person.
-Did I mention the management doesn't really know what they are doing here? All employees have a clear lack in faith in this company and how it operates... and management does not listen at all to those low on the totem pole, well... because they don't care.
-15 minute walk to get lunch... don't even think of driving, as you won't have a parking spot.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of all senior management and start fresh. LISTEN to your employees.
