Overly beauractratic - Professor Monash University Employee Review

Lots of financial pressures, mostly self-inflicted by the Australian government who has no vision for higher education and uses it for political point scoring. Monash's reaction to all this more bureaucracy that suffocats any creativity and takes all the research and academic times to fill new forms. Monash does not honor commitments made in the contracts as startup grants. Multiple colleagues, including myself, were recruited under such commitments (e.g. research and professional staff) and that have never been honored ever after 5-6 years later. Imagine some makes you pay for a Porsche but eventually gives a small Fiat. That's ultimately called cheating, isn't?! The insane increases in teaching loads since 2020 resulted in the loss of a majority of early career academics. Our department had over 15 holders of DECRA, the most prestigious early career fellowship in Australia, since 2018. Over 85% are gone now. The beauractratic processes means that you can't get access to necessary equipment and you need to waste over a year to get a server or any other peice of IT equipment. Monash has the worst IT support unit in the world. They have no common sense in anything they do. They make you spend months completely security forms if you even want to subscribe to a well known training provider (e.g. Coursera). This is so absurd because that means they would like you to completely indefinite amounts of forms for any website. You many judge the level of their competence base on this issue. It has incredibly managerial culture. Three levels of approvals (supervisor, Department head, and the dean) for a routine travel. Course instructors are required to weekly manage the spending on TA for the courses they teach. The least amount of them is spent on actual act of teaching and teaching planning and Innovation. The priority is always on ticking boxes of beauractratic processes that have skyrocketed since 2020. Most of senior management have very mediocre academic trackrecords. They profiles themselves in management, which is fine but it also means that they have profound detachment from what actually happens in the frontline academic activities.
