Competitive compensation but at what price? - Territory Manager III Reynolds American Employee Review

Pros

Compensation is competitive with other marketing positions and field employees still maintain some marginal autonomy in daily activities.

Cons

Goals and expectations are outlandish - not to shareholders, but to the field personnel. Stretch goals become lashes (not only in compensation at times but during the day-to-day from immediate/upper management). Achieving or exceeding goals is rewarded monetarily but the process to do so results in working throughout your “off time” and anyone saying otherwise isn’t honest with themselves or is succeeding on the virtue of their assignment’s dynamics. Change demands a fast response, but there is a difference between fast yet productive and ludicrous speed without realistic plans/direction. One arrives at the conclusion that many things are being done simply because they can and the company is essentially securing results through mere product distribution. As there isn’t time for proper planning or execution many tasks are just pushed down the ladder to be figured out by the field reps without clear direction or timeframes that are achievable without following the procedure mentioned above. A large portion of middle/upper management is becoming either delusional as a result of these actions or simply don’t care as they are worried about hitting their goals/keeping their position secure to the detriment of their subordinates.

Pros

Company car and free gas

Cons

1. The managerial style of the district manager in Seattle is extremely petty, his reviews make no sense whatsoever, and there is a rampant culture of favoritism going on in his district. 2. The insistence on doing “work withs” for a person with high functioning Autism was absolute torture. Even though reasonable accommodations were requested by me, none were given. 3. The district manager also referred to me as in proper nouns that were derogatory and EXTREMELY offensive to someone with Autism numerous times. 4. The payout of bonuses were also extremely infrequent, even though I qualified for them. 5. Finally during the interview process, one of the biggest selling points that was made to me was a promise of a work life balance with “exemplary pay.” Neither of which came to fruition.
