Pros

Vanguard has a genuinely strong culture, backed by great benefits and real opportunities to grow within the organization. The people are what stand out most. Tere’s a level of authenticity and care here that’s hard to find, and it shows up in how teams support one another day to day regardless of title or hierarchy. Work-life balance isn’t just talked about either...it’s actually respected....and there are thoughtful support systems in place for a wide range of crew needs - from working parents to neurodiverse crew members to the LGBTQ+ community. It’s not uncommon to meet people who have been here 25+ years, which says a lot about their job stability and how connected people feel to its mission. Vanguard is one of the few companies I’ve seen that truly follows through on what it says it stands for. For the most part....

Cons

The primary concern I’ve seen is how slow the company is to remove underperforming or problematic crew members or leaders - even when the issues are visible and openly acknowledged. This isn’t the norm across the organization - but when it does occur, it has a devastating and disproportionate impact. I’ve watched high-performing teams decline under a bad leader while the crew member's concerns were visibly raised, validated, and then simply left unaddressed. Over time, it always results in the same pattern of disengagement, loss of trust, and then a large exodus of strong talent - many of whom would have truly preferred to stay. This isn’t about differences in styles or resistance to change either...it’s about consistent behavioral patterns such as a lack of accountability, misattribution of work, gaslighting, and finger pointing - leading to a psychologically unsafe environment that is hard to prove on paper and damages the perception of those who still try to call it out. Vanguard does many things exceptionally well, which is why this stands out. Taking more immediate and decisive action in these situations would go a long way in retaining strong talent and protecting the teams that would otherwise be thriving.

Pros

Awesome coworkers for young professionals. Paid licensing for a few months.

Cons

Micromanagement is out of control. Incompetent team leaders who are obsessed with power and metrics. Back to back calls, limited support, and nearly impossible effective communication between departments. Zero time to cultivate culture because you are taking calls every second of the day except for 30min/1hr lunch and two 15 minute breaks. You’re locked into your role for over a year (apprenticeship for around 60 days, then a year after promotion to associate) and your team leaders will not approve internal applications unless you are “eligible”.
