Pros

Some incredible colleagues. You will also have the opportunity to do things you have no real experience doing.

Cons

You'll often feel like you're in upside down world here. Client deadlines? They don't matter. Common protocols and clear communication? Nope. A competitive salary? You've got to be kidding. What you get instead is a toxic culture where a few ineffectual people at the top go unquestioned while everyone else is either thrown to the wolves or micromanaged to death.  So if you're looking for a company where your opinion and time are respected, where you can have honest conversations with management, and where you can grow... then this is not the company for you.

Pros

I learned a lot, fast. The flat structure contributed to the empowerment of all employees to have a seat at the table and have your voice be heard and your opinion matter. I had the choice to wear many hats and learn from some of the most talented multidisciplinary people at this agency. This place is filled with great storytellers and creatives that are passionate about the work. They were always pitching for and/or looking for new ways to grow the business, but not with just any client. They were thoughtful in who they wanted to work with - companies that want to make a difference. Even though we had many projects on our plates, I remember the Principal and the Director of Creative Services always put aside some time to have these meetings and talk about projects that could contribute to social causes that were obviously going to be an investment, but I didn't realize until I moved on from Hiker that the return from those projects meant so much more than a monetary return. This speaks to Hiker Company having some of the most genuine, talented, human beings you can ever work with. Keep up the good fight and the good work.

Cons

Not for everyone, you need to come in and know how to move things along on your own or figure it out. The leads will give you great advice, but there is no hand holding. Lastly, salaries can improve, but that's a give in considering the size of the agency and projects. I have faith that will change over time.

Pros

They have some talented, friendly people.

Cons

You’ll often hear this company use words and phrases that are wildly misleading. Here are a few explanations from a former employee to help you decipher the Hiker code. “Self Starting”: No one will tell you what to do, but you’re expected to get it done. The lines will often blur on what you were hired to do, and what random tasks you’re expected to learn quickly. “We have a flat company culture”: Too much collaboration = no owned decisions. Accountability is completely lacking, and decision making involves intensive rounds of discussions with zero outcome. “We need someone well organized”: We’re a mess and need help cleaning it up. “Roll with the punches”: We don’t have the ability to tell the client ‘no’. But we’ll work for $1, so make the budget work. “Lots of room for growth”: You’ll be doing work well above your pay grade. “Take an idea and run with it”: We have absolutely no idea what we want and are able to give you zero direction on it. “We’re a smart group of people”: A phrase used by the owner of the company to a.) feed our ego and b.) distract you from the fact that we don’t know who we are as a company. Overall, the company is largely run by three people. This close knit group will over-strategize and over-manage you to the point of exhaustion. They will under-value you almost as much as under-pay you. And the influence you have depends solely on whether or not you are part of this “elite” group. It is a toxic environment with hidden power structures and I implore you to find somewhere else to work. There are tons of small creative agencies in NYC that will value your time, efforts, and energy. All while paying you a fair salary. This is not one of those places.
