Pros

The office has a very nice view and the location is convenient. Also, they have ping pong and you can occasionally sample alcohol and food products. I think that may be the “fun” people are talking about. But if that’s what you are looking for in a job then maybe Dave and Buster’s is where you should really be applying to because I hear they have great team outings and some games to keep you preoccupied.

Cons

Now if you are looking for more in your employment than some miniature frat life OR you aren’t a fan of shady management that uses outdated war tactics to undermine their employees then I highly suggest you avoid this company at all costs. DO NOT BELIEVE THE RATINGS. The reason you are only reading 5-star reviews is that people sign away their rights in order to get some kind of compensation after they’ve been screwed over by the company. All that family-friendly work environment they are trying to peddle is nonsense unless the family they are referring to is the Corleones. This company will pretend that it is progressive and has a great work culture. They will tell you how much they appreciate “candor” and “openness”. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. It is a facade. They are threatened by people who are direct and competent. They do not want anyone to oppose their shady tactics and inefficient techniques. If you have morals, a brain, AND a backbone, this company is NOT for you. They want sheep. They reward incompetency. Ironically, the one person that constantly demands that no one has an ego is the person with the biggest ego by far. Again, they will tell you that they are not but if you challenge them in any way, you will be on the chopping block. They don’t want your ideas and your opinions. They want your obedience and blind loyalty. The leadership is threatened by backbones. In the last year, around 50% of the employees have either been fired or laid off. In less than 6 months, two out of five executives were fired and an alarmingly significant amount of really great talent resigned. However, if you are an incompetent female and you get the job, flirt with upper management and you will advance. If you are an incompetent male and you get the job, be the CEO’s “yes” man and he will reward you with promotions and job security. If you are a competent male or female and you get the job, it will be a daily dose of demoralization to see incompetent people advance for simply stroking the ego of the CEO. Now that we established they lie about what they want in a work environment, let's discuss how they lie to employees (both potential and current). The first example relates to how the company prided itself on being “profitable”. It was a huge selling point for them both in job postings and in interviews. It’s how they lured potential employees to make the move to the area only to lay them off a couple of months later … for not being profitable. The actions of upper management over the past year illustrates that this has been and continues to be a sinking ship. Another example is how they have no qualms about promising things to employees and then going back on their word (which might explain why paranoia permeates the entire office). If you ever have to deal with this company in any sense, remember that they should not be trusted. Seriously, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for a job. I especially advise anyone even thinking about making the move to San Mateo area for this job to refrain from doing it. The leadership at this company is immoral and won’t even think twice before screwing you over. Do not trust them. The entire culture they present in their postings and videos is a facade. The reality is that Man Crates is a fumbling company, being lead by an oversized-ego with zero morals that is grasping at anything in sight in order to survive another year.

I don’t typically respond to reviews left about me or our company, but after reading this one, I felt compelled to reply. Nearly every assertion in this review is patently false, though I do agree with the reviewer on one point - I wouldn’t want to join the kind of company this person describes. Fortunately, that company bears zero resemblance to Man Crates. Rather that spending the time to refute this review line by line, here’s what I would ask of someone reading this review and exploring the possibility of working with the talented, hard-working, and creative people of Man Crates: Please come talk to us and decide for yourself if this review is accurate. Drop by the office to see if we have a “frat life” culture (we don’t). Read the thousands of awesome reviews from our customers. Check out our company videos online that show the real people of Man Crates. Scour our website for any kind of misogynistic language or behavior that this person alleges. With a little bit of effort, I’m confident that you’ll realize that Man Crates is a place where great people have a chance to do great things.

Pros

Some cool people working here. Fun happy hours. Great location. Unlimited vacation. Not sure how unlimited “unlimited” is though.

Cons

CEO struggles with telling the truth. CEO will either tell you one thing and then do another or will ignore you until he’s fired you for “differences of opinion”. The past few months a lot of people were fired or “resigned”, everyone from the top tier to the bottom. CEO said we were in great shape and numbers were good, then a few weeks later a lay off happened. After the layoff he told us not to worry because no one else was being let go and then he fired someone else. The work environment has become so draining. No trust left. It’s weird seeing all these raving reviews when the workplace is a stark contrast from it and its been like this for months. Either bad reviews are being taken down or all the “great” reviews are being left by the same person.

The reviewer is right that things this last year have been bumpy. We’re a startup doing hard things, and progress often comes in fits and starts - and that’s certainly been the case recently. We recently had to say goodbye to several people we care about and respect. It was painful both for the folks that were laid off as well as the folks that remained. The strong feelings that frequently accompany such a transition are certainly understandable. Transitions often bring into focus the reality that we’re walking a narrow, steep path on the way to doing something new. At times, that path widens and life becomes effortless. In those moments it’s easy to fall into complacency believing that we’ve “made it”. But, inevitably, that path narrows again. And it’s in those narrowing moments that I’m especially grateful for the resilience, fortitude and perseverance that our team shows on a regular basis. It’s humbling to know that they’ve chosen to spend part of their lives working to delight our customers and build the kind of company we all want - especially when the path again grows narrow and steep.

Pros

Fun and smart co-workers and overall culture. Good work life balance.

Cons

Tendency to recreate the wheel versus accepting industry tools / approaches. Wastes time. A lot of meetings / proposed solutions are not necessary or likely to succeed.
