Team is disposable

Pros

Most of the team are genuinely nice and try to be helpful as best that they can. Room for growth (sort of) as it is a quickly growing company. You will learn a lot in a short period of time. Being fully remote and not needing to deal with commuting. Benefits have gotten significantly better to now include 401k.

Cons

Nepotism is pretty prevalent with that not everyone is treated the same of faces the same consequences for mistakes made. They also want expert level experience but pay entry level or below market value wages. There has been A LOT of resignations over the last few months but instead of really analyzing why this is happening, the CEO chucked it to "growth" and not everyone can handle it. It couldn't be any further from the truth. People do not quit jobs, they quit toxic environments. While every person can be replaced, treating them like they are disposable *while* insisting on a core value about "helping people grow" is a huge contradiction. A growing company will lose some people in the process however, when you are losing the main people who has helped the company grow, that's a red flag that something is going on within leadership.

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback with us. We appreciate and value the input from current and former employees. We agree that our team is genuinely nice and helpful, there is tons of growth opportunities, being remote is awesome and we offer great benefits. Glad we can see eye to eye on that, because we really value those things. We also recognize that during this time of high growth we might not be the right fit for everyone, but we are constantly looking for ways to improve and help make sure our team members are both appreciated and supported. There is no way around this....change and growth is hard. But we are invested in our leaders and we are focused on rolling out a management training program that will help our managers grow to be the best leaders they can be. We are excited to continue to grow talent within SMC and offer them opportunities for growth, whether that means at SMC, or somewhere else down the line. We don’t feel that any employee is disposable and as we continue to grow and evolve, we strive to help all of our team recognize their talents and give them every opportunity we can. Best of luck in your career.

Pros

Insurance, 401K match, Work from home, 9/80 work week (if it applies to you, I was told I wasn't eligible even though I was FT employee)

Cons

Trying too hard to look hip and relevant. Company culture is important- everyone wants the perks like work from home, short week, or flex hours, but those things become less appealing when you spend the majority of your time putting out client fires and checking off tasks that are unnecessary and irrelevant. Looking to work here? Ask a few questions: 1.) How long does the average CSM, sales person, web developer, designer or video team member last? Why? Look at the employee stats. Yes, the NUMBER of people in the company has increased, but employee retention is poor. People come in enthusiastic and optimistic genuinely wanting to make a difference but simply adding numerically with no structure, vision or purpose does not mean you’re business is growing or successful. 2.) Who are some of your biggest clients, and how long have they been with the company? Inquire about client retention and satisfaction. Yes, they acquired some notable clients based on the personality and charisma of the leader, but many found the follow through lacking. Lots of promises with little support. 3.) How do you handle conflict? Growth, whether in staff or increased clients tests limits, pushes boundaries and challenges the status quo. Severe lack of organization (somewhat expected of a start up) and shortsighted goals were disappointing. Conflict uncovered areas that needed to be addressed and when challenged, leadership was not equipped to handle it. Instead, they tossed the problems to people who were not qualified, trained or prepared to manage it while they went off to pursue different passions (podcast/marketing app). Processes and protocol changed from the “available”, “I’ve got your back” “we’re in this together” boss and leader who did weekly one on one check ins to stay connected, to someone who was unavailable, ghosted meetings, and dodged emails, calls and texts. Leadership needs to recognize that resolving conflict in a professional manner rather than avoiding it or passing the buck will not only earn you the respect of your employees, but increase the morale, culture and longevity of your team.

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We appreciate your candor and pay close attention to this sort of feedback. Building a happy team where everyone looks out for one another is our top priority. We do our best to live up to that goal and are thrilled to work with such a talented, excited group of folks whose collective brilliance also plays a big role in why our client retention rate is three times the industry average. That being said, we hear clearly that we have let you down. When you started with us, we were a small company, and our CEO, Gary, was directly involved in managing everyone on board. Since then, we have tripled in size. This has been messy! We’ve failed more than once and our team has had to scramble to pick up the pieces. During this process, Gary also began focusing more on our long-term development. He delegated most of his responsibilities over business operations and was much less available as a day-to-day manager. We understand that as a result, you feel like Gary and the rest of our leadership team broke your trust and didn’t give you the support you were counting on. Please know that we regret that and are sorry. Thank you for all of your excellent work on our behalf. We’re grateful and wish you the best of luck.

Pros

There are SOME people here who I enjoyed working with. This company largely consists of friends and relatives of the CEO so be careful who you talk to. The 9/80 schedule can be a good benefit if your supervisor/boss allows you to actually use it. However, it's likely that even on your "Friday off" you will still get a bunch of emails and requests.

Cons

No doubt this review will end up being posted on the CEO's personal social media account stating that SMC just "isn't the right fit for some" or "we are always looking to improve." To an outsider you’re thinking, “wow they really value their people and feedback.” Let me assure you, it's a façade. What will actually happen is they will villainize this review internally and do nothing to change. They will brag to you that they are a growing company, but they aren't. They aren't doing anything to help their people or business grow - only making more podcasts every week and making sure the CEO gets his limelight. Sure, hitting the "INC 5000" list is great - if you don't inflate your revenue. All I will say is if you are interviewing here, ask about client churn. You can work really hard here and be rewarded with nothing. Doesn't matter if you take on extra projects, become a manager, build things out - they won't promote you or give you the raise you deserve. There are so many more examples I would love to share but honestly, I'm just done with this place. If you value your sanity, time, life, and career just stay away. Go work somewhere that actually cares about you as a human being and not just the amount of $ you can bring them.

Each company on the list goes through a rigorous verification process to ensure the information provided is accurate.
