Pros

Great work life balance and vacation time....

Cons

Many internal issues and felt like this last round of layoffs was to protect inadequate leaders vs hardworking employees. I understand companies do layoffs but this just felt like Senior management trying to protect themselves because they aren't doing an effective job. I really think there are some issues with the leadership team and it probably needs an overhaul. There was never any strategy from product outside of one small area. The rest of the business was left without any guidance or support. I really think the US/UK shared services model does not work. The UK and US just are entirely different markets and the UK at the end of the day doesn't really care about the US nor move as quickly.

Culture Problems

Business outlook

Pros

Still a few good people left. Community feel amongst peers outside of work.

Cons

Toxic culture created by management. Company states it has a focus on improving the culture but it can't be fixed until management sort / see themselves out as the new management & management style is the problem. Working on the assumption that management aren't going to put their hands up and address that they are the issue, the culture will never be what it used to be which was when managers actually cared about their teams. The management style is now more akin to bullying in the workplace and blame (under the guise of accountability) than it is trying to develop your team. People speak up (multiple against one manager in some instances) and are told it's just the managers "management style". This seems to be a growing, common phrase now. High staff turnover in certain pockets of the business where management is particularly bad, never questioned or addressed. Engagement surveys from employees expressing dissatisfaction in the workplace swept under the carpet every year with no action or consequence off the back of them, instead focusing on trivial side questions or any positive available. Average / below average pay Downsized office size just before doubling the quota for people having to come into the office, result is not enough parking so have to park off site if you don't get in early enough and thats if you can actually get a seat in the office when teams are having team days (frequent). Redundancies happening on the quiet after what appeared to be open transparency that no more would be coming, as if no one in the office talks and will learn about them or notice people disappearing around them.

Pros

Great diversity in this company - many women in senior positions, support for the LGBTQ+ community and an inclusive approach to neurodivergence and people with disabilities. Good company-wide culture of recognising and rewarding employees through the “Kudo$h” system, staff awards, celebratory company events. At times the positivity was genuinely uplifting. Many hard-working, smart colleagues focussed on doing a great job. Exciting tech platform, good hybrid working culture, excellent scale up potential (sadly not being executed well enough at senior level)

Cons

Management at the top of Shared Services created a tense and intimidating culture, senior staff hired and then unceremoniously fired, demonstrating seriously poor judgement. They introduced agile development practices in the company with no experience or understanding of how to scale them, alongside poorly conceived metrics. This led to chaos, increasingly poor code quality and misdirected investments. What should have been a fantastic experience working in a tech-enabled scale up instead became a toxic experience - senior managers increasingly fearful to speak out. Persisted for years and hadn’t been addressed by the CEO/People Team by the time I left.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We appreciate your positive comments about our diverse and inclusive culture, our employee recognition system, and our dedicated colleagues. We are incredibly proud of the culture we've built and are committed to maintaining an environment where everyone feels valued and supported. We're equally proud of the significant progress we've made in modernising our platform. Our focus on agile development has been instrumental in our ability to bring new products to market quickly and respond to customer needs at a rapid pace. We've always believed in a culture built on trust, respect, and autonomy and are disappointed to hear you feel your experience became toxic – this doesn't chime with our expectations, and is something we'd love to explore further. We will share your comments with our leadership team and would welcome further conversation if you're open to speaking with a member of our People Team.

Pros

The people within my team are great and very supportive, I also feel like there is real career progression within my area. Free lunches, social events (without pressure) and flexible working.

Cons

The salaries as have been mentioned on here are not great. This was fine when you only had to be in the office once a month, but now it is 8 times a month (which granted, in 2026 is still not bad), salaries have not improved and previous benefits have been taken away. The caring side of management seems to be slowly going away, with office attendance being tracked rather than trusting employees as adults to come in, checking in with managers if there are issues.

Thank you for sharing an honest and detailed review of your five years with us. It’s great to hear that you feel supported by your team and see a clear path for your career progression, that is exactly the kind of environment we continually strive to build. However, it’s clear that recent changes have created some frustrations, and we really appreciate your candor. We know the shift to 8 days a month in the office is an adjustment from our previous flexibility, and recognize this will have an impact on the likes of travel costs. However, we firmly believe this helps maintain our unique culture – one which allows us to foster relationships with each other, do our best for our customers, and ultimately develop our people. Regarding your feedback on the recent pay review and the transparency of our "Exceeds" ratings: thank you. We want our rewards to feel fair and motivating, ensuring that those who go above and beyond are rewarded fairly. Your insights on the rating balance, specifically how easy it feels to miss vs. how hard it is to exceed are valuable and we will be sharing this directly with our People Team to ensure our framework remains balanced and consistent for everyone. We would love the opportunity to discuss this further and find ways to better support your experience, as we truly value your impact and want to ensure Simply Business remains a place where you feel you can continue to grow.

Pros

- Lovely immediate colleagues meant a low-stress, convivial team atmosphere to work in - A model of supportiveness (esp team lead) when I experienced a major bereavement - CTO is a sharp cookie who negotiated a tricky and unpopular restructure well and has eye on the ball with AI - Lot of scope in the team I was in to experiment and trial new technologies

Cons

- Opaque promotion process that never gets mentioned by senior management and may or may not involve a very out-of-date career framework that doesn't match any role. It was all too easy to leave for better prospects. - Politics over productivity - Some unimpressive senior managers more focussed on looking good than understanding the systems and people they are managing. - The "Simply Business spirit" that is still sometimes invoked has long gone

Pros

Before they fired all the good people who knew what they were doing, the biggest pro was the people. Now that they are gone, working at SB is depressing and exhausting.

Cons

Unskilled leadership across the board. The company is floundering internally with massive layoffs of tenured employees, leaving contractors to come and go like a revolving door. SB is not people first. SB does not promote within. SB does not advocate for their best employees. SB does not give structured performance increases. Moral was low before I left, and I know from others still on board that morale is even lower now following massive layoffs. From what I’ve heard from those still there, it’s a complete circus now. Don’t work here unless you love chaos, misguided strategy, not being valued for the work you do, and mistreatment and mistrust from upper management.

Not the place it used to be

Pros

Everyone is generally nice and friendly

Cons

- Losing the culture that once made it a great place to work & has now become more corporate - Management changing priorities - Seems to be all about output now and velocity as have recently introduced performance based bonuses. - Several restructures lately but it's all done undercover and not communicated which has led to teams competing with each other as to who can deliver the most, as there is an underlying fear that their team will be restructured if targets are not met

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on life at Simply Business – we really do value all feedback, both good and bad. We’re disappointed to read your thoughts on our culture, which we feel strongly continues to be a strength – and we’re encouraged by recent strong engagement scores where SBers cited that Simply Business is a place where they felt a strong sense of belonging. We believe Simply Business’s ‘culture’ has always been a unique balance of inclusion, flexibility, community, purpose, and going the extra mile – for each other, for our customers, and for our communities. We’ve long been proud of our pioneering spirit and ability to deliver (and learn) at pace, recognising that innovation is in our DNA and central to our promise to deliver the best possible experience for our customers. And we think carefully about how we best balance this with the authenticity and empathy that makes us all enjoy showing up for work. We’d love to talk more about your concerns, and recognise that we can (and should) always be looking for ways to iterate, evolve, and improve the experience at SB. If you’d be happy to, please do reach out to our People team so we can try to dig a little deeper into how we might improve. Thanks again.

Pros

Cushy benefits for not much work. Easy bonuses, talks about your mental wellbeing a lot giving days off including all expenses paid trips abroad, this year everyone travelling to Athens for FOUR DAYS

Cons

Pandering to their employees means nothing gets done as noone held accountable for targets. Lazy underperforming people still attract discretionary bonuses and payrises due to favouritism Management don't know what they are doing, resting on their laurels and dont know how to grow the company and blame or bully others

Significant decline in company culture and employee wellbeing

Pros

The people I worked alongside day to day (not management for the avoidance of doubt) are some of the kindest, supportive and knowledgeable people I have had the pleasure to work with. They are the only reason for giving any stars in my rating.

Cons

Firstly I used to love working at Simply Business; I was one of its biggest supporters. The culture and employee wellbeing made it a wonderful place to work. That has disappeared over the last 2 years; operating in the vast majority of departments now as a corporate machine; where behind closed doors people are suffering terribly. Personal experience: I was an employee with a consistent record across many many years of excellent colleague and stakeholder feedback, instant reward recognition, and a real respect shown to me. Despite this, my manager relentlessly attempted to destroy my confidence and faith in my ability. Examples include regular gas-lighting, blame shifting towards me, denial of instructions, assigning tasks with vague/ subjective metrics to set me up for failure. The effect of being subjected to this was compounded by the fact I felt I had no one I could safely escalate to. Overall, I know I am not alone in my experience/s. As the company has grown, there has been a shift towards endorsing a culture of leading with fear and intimidation practice. Alongside this there is a growing cultivation towards a “dog eat dog” mentality/ behaviour - the active taking of others’ ideas (without any credit) and the stockpiling of high profile work for personal recognition. Ultimately this work environment has and will continue to cause the suffering of many employees resulting in them leaving.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are saddened to hear that your experience at Simply Business declined and that your relationship with your manager was not what you wanted it to be. In particular, we get ongoing feedback from our SBers that they feel their managers truly care about them, so your input will help us add to the training and resources we provide to all SB managers. This includes new manager training, ongoing training on navigating and evaluating performance, career development conversations for managers (how to facilitate the conversation), quarterly manager specific workshops on core managerial skills. We are sorry to see that you felt there wasn’t an avenue for you to raise your concerns while you were employed. We have multiple channels for employees to share feedback and get support when needed. We understand that you may not wish to, but we encourage you to reach out to our People Team directly, so we can discuss your experience in more detail.
