Pros

8-4:30 job with an hour off for lunch, descent pay, stable work (not going to get laid off), weekends off, health benefits, pension, paid vacation & sick, etc. (all the typical government benefits), flex scheduling after you’ve been there a while, county wide classes on wellness, health, conflict resolution, etc are occasionally offered.

Cons

75 hour bi-weekly pay period (not 80, surprisingly), dental doesn’t kick in for 6 months after you start, sick leave accrues at 2 hours a pay period for the first year, and $40 union dues every paycheck. Training on the fundamentals like the ordinance, applications, software programs, and forms is non existent- have to ask your co-workers everything, sedentary work environment behind the computer majority all day everyday, little to no office culture, filled with some baby boomers who have a half glass empty mentality and are not happy to still be there but for some reason or another haven’t retired yet. The work environment is like sitting in a library most days with the lack of substantive communication amongst co-workers in the department.

Pros

Stability - steady work and peace of mind knowing that full time work is available. Flexibility - flexible work schedules and ample vacation as well as personal leave are also available. Retirement options - while most employers are doing away with benefits, St Louis County offers a retirement/pension plan as well as other options for deferred compensation. Variety of jobs - government work does not have to be behind a desk. There are jobs ranging from forestry and environment health, to public health, public works, computers, social work, human resources, accounting and more.

Cons

Although the County is the largest East of the Mississippi, it is mostly rural area. The number of opportunities are limited compared to that of a metropolitan area.
