Pros

You get a free uniform (purple) which isn't that great. You also get 25% staff discount. You don't get free chocolate unlike head office staff who can eat it all day.

Cons

Chocolate heaven since 1911. True? No! It was once but not anymore. Regardless of my opinion of this company, as an insider I will say that they will cut costs of ingredients to accommodate flash cars and nice salaries... for high level management of course. The quality is becoming poorer all the time. The last chocolatier wanted high quality ingredients so they got rid of him and didn't even tell anyone he'd left. I've worked for Thorntons now for about 11 years. In that 11 years I've seen people come and go and come and go more times than a successful prosititute. Management at head office: Persuasion is key. More times than I can remember, I heard integral management say 'we need to rely on loyalty to keep stores open as we just won't be giving pay increases' That loyalty is driven by NOTHING but expectation and those expectations are over and above the basic human right to breathe! You are expected to Pay for your own props in store Pay for your staffs incentives Pay for your stores needs in regard to photocopying, postage etc (there's no budget for petty cash) some stores are expected to clean their own Windows. Stay well beyond your contracted hours as 'an expectation of the position you're paid for' Set up stores out of hours to a level of 'unexpected visits' Visitors will pick up on the lightest mistake - this chocolate bar is showing its barcode - on the back of it, expect to be totally alienated by your regional manager I simply don't understand how a business is run by a little man whose bromance with a taller man is the solid and only foundation of a confectioner that is now owned entirely by an Italian firm. They won't refit tired stores but will happily refurbish their entire reception area at the head office to accommodate a visit from its new owners They let regional managers chose hilariously over priced company cars but totally forget to pay those who travel distances for the business and then blame the postal service They will ask your opinion and 'take it on board but you can guarantee you'll be 'managed' into another way of thinking through a process they teach the elite called coaching. Their decision is final, no fluctuation at all ever. My regional manager always tells new starters that 'there's no clicks on my region' but then she has a little circle of either extremely homosexual males or overly brown nosed girls that literally manhunt people in the most unacceptable way you can imagine. I see another post on here that details a lot of many people's thoughts. Those thoughts will never be spoken of to a face as if they were, you'd find yourself totally destroyed. So glad this is anonymous. People are leaving left right and centre and if I didn't have a family to support, I'd be right there with them!! If you have the option, then do not join this company. It'll set you back years in your career and then they'll drop you for the slightest reason Thorntons is probably as bad if not worse than sports direct and if we watch the news.... we know how awful that is

Pros

Get 25% Discount. There are not enough pros to fill the 20 word minimum required for this review. Enough said really.

Cons

No communication. No one at head office answers their phones. HR do not even know their own policies, instead they threaten you with dismissal and accuse you of breaking the law! Head office conveniently 'never receive' important documents even tho you show proof of them being signed for. No one answers their phones! Regional managers lie through their teeth in interviews, and never deliver what is promised to get you in the role. Expected to work 50+ hours and not get paid. It takes minimum 3 months working there before payroll actually pay you correctly what you are owed. Their method of communication is post. No email. No one answers their phones!! You can send a message to someone but you have no proof of it being sent and then the message magically disappears into space. Messaging service is 1 way only. You cannot get a reply. You are expected to use your own phone and own data to use 'watsapp' because the company is that professional... No one answers their phones!!! No support, some managers are just brown noses and other managers just moan about everyone else. Most managers have no idsa about business. Only ice cream. Horrible company to work for, they do not value good people and have no interest in progressing those who are capable, seemingly because of their age! I'm only here until I find something else. It's a shame this well know brand has been left to become managed this way.

Pros

In store teams can be brilliant, some head office staff are lovely are really helpful and you get bank holidays off paid.

Cons

Sadly not treat well at all. Told we are nothing to the company "just a till number". Regional manager is allowed to run the region on own rules and literally make up policies as she goes to suit her. Such little respect for the managers running her shops she hasn't even got the decency to say hello when going on a bus to meetings full of her managers, will only speak to her 'regional support team'. I use these words "regional support team" very loosely as the only support they provide (when not actually on the sick to a point any other person is forced to leave) is to support using bullying tactics on people they have taken a dislike to for no known reason. No acknowledgment of achievements or simple well done, only ever negative attitude and complete disrespect for store management to the point where phone calls are not returned, emails ignored and post goes " missing " that often I contemplated getting an owl to know it was received. You will also be questioned about authenticity of hours worked even though you get paid 39 hrs a week and work over this every week and spend your xmas eve at work until 9pm, however you will get an email "wishing you all a lovely relaxing Christmas Eve night with your families". They forget we didn't finish midday and our families are all tucked up in bed by the time we get through our door xmas eve, even Santa gets there before us! I could say a lot more but after another day of working 10 hours and only getting paid for 7.5 of them I'm rather tired now so think twice before thinking of joining this company as things are going downhill faster than a wagon full of fat kids.
