Pros

None— all the pros have left with the clients

Cons

TopRank is an agency that is extremely out of touch with the industry and has lost its way. They have not met revenue goals for over a year, since they’re bleeding clients and doing careless, error-laden work for the few clients they have left. Not bringing in revenue has shifted the culture from a flexible, laidback remote team to a tense, stressful, overly demanding, and toxic working environment. Quarterly employee surveys are used to ferret out the malcontents, with managers then instructed to “talk to so and so about their responses” so they can tell employees what they’re feeling is unwarranted. Direct feedback is avoided and backchannel communications abound as people go over each others’ heads to complain about someone. Tension between creatives and account services is on a constant boil, with leaders being quick to point fingers instead of working to de-escalate friction between team members. Worse yet is that TopRank’s leadership do not possess the skills or business acumen to critique strategic initiatives, so they nitpick tactics. This is also a passive aggressive way they assert dominance over team members they just don’t like. As someone who worked very hard on everything I had a hand in creating, this persistent drip, drip, drip of petty criticism was demoralizing. It wreaked havoc on my mental health, leaving me insecure, discouraged, paranoid, and very depressed. The persistent passive aggression is poisoning whatever culture is left at TopRank. Instead of putting time and money into improving their services, upskilling their teams, and adequately training managers to be effective leaders, TopRank would rather stick to what they’ve done for 20+ years. That’s why they keep beating the drum of offering long-form content for SEO and “B2B influencers”, though they have yet to update approaches to either. Unless you count raising prices as an update. Pricing keeps going up since TopRank isn’t making enough revenue. Rates for services are shocking given the work is so poorly led and unoriginal— and that’s IF they even know how to do what they promise clients. Leaders fabricated services offered by TopRank for SOWs and RFPs, pulling packages and pricing out of thin air. What has formed in the absence of actual skills is a glaring deficit of competitive knowledge about the industry and its high standards. Unfortunately (or fortunately, in this case) there’s a reckoning for agencies that is happening. Sloppy, typo-laden, late work will not cut it anymore. The clients know it too, which is why one by one, they’re dropping like flies. This agency’s work is mediocre at best, and a gigantic waste of client marketing dollars at worst.

Pros

Friendly people that work hard, snacks, free parking, nice office space in the suburbs, 20 days of PTO and great health insurance coverage.

Cons

High turnover, little flexibility in schedule, difficult to get away from your desk for a break or lunch, managers too busy to support the people they manage, the client always comes first at the employee’s expense.

At our agency I have kept my door wide open to any and all feedback from all employees. To learn someone has had less than an impressive experience working at our growing agency - especially on Glassdoor vs. in person where there would be an opportunity to address concerns, is disappointing. That said, I appreciate the feedback and am highly motivated to sort through it. My goal is to create and inspire our team to fulfill their professional ambitions through great work for our clients. We provide many opportunities to share feedback, suggest changes and voluntarily complete surveys about our work environment. With changes made in our team communications several years ago, we continue to be committed to creating a fulfilling work environment. We conduct regular team surveys and 1on1 meetings and have consistently implemented team suggestions from those surveys/discussions. The truth is, we have flexible schedules with variable start/stop times and allow employees to work from home with approval. Team members are free to take breaks, or lunch whenever they want. We even deliver lunch every Monday, at every all-hands meeting and for other celebrations of our amazing team. Because of the friendly people that work hard for our clients, TopRank Marketing has experienced record growth in 2017 and meeting the challenges of recruiting in a state where there are more open positions than people looking is something we've tackled very seriously. In fact, we are on-boarding new leadership in multiple positions as well as specialists in Account Management, SEO, social/influence and content marketing during October alone. I cannot help but have an optimistic view of the progress that the talented group of professionals we have on our team has achieved. Even if there is just one experience that is counter to the goal of supporting our team to achieve professional success, it is a reminder that we need to do better. And our leadership team is committed to doing just that.

Expect the Unexpected… Mostly Layoffs

Pros

- You’ll develop excellent layoff survival instincts - Excellent place to practice interviewing for your next job - Leadership gets all the credit and none of the accountability—aspirational, in a way - Great place to meet people—especially when they get laid off and join better companies.

Cons

- DEI must stand for “Don’t Expect Inclusion” around here - Employee feedback is “welcomed” and immediately ignored - No career development—unless you count surviving as a skill - Benefits package includes burnout, anxiety, and LinkedIn Premium (because you’ll need it) - Senior leadership always lands softly—everyone else gets the rug pulled

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We recognize that periods of organizational change, particularly those driven by market and revenue shifts, can be difficult. We understand that experiences during those times can leave lasting impressions. Like many marketing agencies, we have had to make challenging decisions in response to changes in client demand and the broader market environment. When those decisions have involved workforce reductions, they were made to ensure the long-term viability of the company, not as a reflection of individual performance or value. We do not agree with the characterization of our leadership or culture as described here. We remain committed to treating employees with respect, listening to feedback, and continuing to evolve how we operate as a business. Experiences can vary widely depending on timing and circumstance, and we acknowledge that not every individual experience will be the same. Feedback is always appreciated, both positive and critical. And we continue to encourage open, direct dialogue so concerns can be addressed constructively and in context. We wish all former team members success in their next chapters.
