What is the hiring process like at American Airlines?

Wages are below national average. Very clique-y. Opportunities for promotions exist, but hiring managers are biased and tend to focus on awarding positions to their friends, even when they aren't qualified for the positions, especially here in DFW. Longevity and experience gained with the company do not matter when applying for jobs. Over the years, I was passed over for several promotions; positions were given to others with less or no experience or external applicants. After receiving my BA (while working with the company), I begun applying for open positions. Multiple interviews, no offers, and rejections for several positions for which I had the education and experience and met both the basic and preferred qualifications. To be specific, I applied for a position and interviewed with another person who had no experience. educational or job related - did not meet the qualifications. Guess what, the inexperienced person received the job.  After consulting my HRBP, I was advised to quit and reapply as my recently acquired BA will put me at the top of the preferred list. ended up being laid off.

No cons great work environment

Free domestic & international travel (for you, your spouse, parents and siblings/ close friends)!!!!! Full time benefits (401k, health, dental, vision insurance) with part time hours.

Very strict 6 month new hire probation period. Can’t call out, be late (not even by one minute), or even get sick without getting written up. Can’t swap shifts or pick up extra hours for 90 days. Part time hours, full time commitment (5 days a week) which makes it hard to pick up additional job opportunities and utilize travel benefits for anything more than a day trip (unless you swap shifts with someone).

Work life balance becomes a perk as your seniority grows.

Instability as a new hire.

Environment at headquarters is nice. They try to foster an inclusive, active, and exciting culture.

One of the worst profit sharing and bonus policies . Upper management constantly shuts down conversations regarding better benefits with the argument that minimal benefits and low salary are compensated with flight benefits. Also hanging "restructuring and changes" over everyone's heads since 2023 while CEO rakes in millions in base salary and bonuses. Corporate seems to be steering towards hiring new blood instead of valuing experience. Lot more new masters degree grads and no movement for people who have been in the industry and have invaluable experience.

Don't ever get into a car wreck on your probation are you will be on the no hiring list.

Decent pay once you’re topped out. It’s great for new hires, but experienced senior level guys coming in have a long 8 year wait to make decent money. As of lately, DEI hiring seems to outweigh knowledge and experience.

Union They say there are merit raises, but nobody gets them. Healthcare stinks Your experience and knowledge takes a backseat to seniority.

People are great and industry complexity lends numerous opportunities to learn. Horizontal mobility is unparalleled, and there are numerous opportunities to change roles.

Pay scale rewards professional hires and graduate degrees with superior compensation without elevating responsibilities (i.e. I entered out of undergrad, received a promotion and two salary adjustments, and make significantly less than lower level masters+ hires). HR also unequivocally said no to salary negotiations to me at hiring, yet I know of examples of comparable hires receiving 25% more than myself. Leadership unwilling to adjust.

Fast paced exciting . Chatting with passengers on there travels. Constantly doing different tasks from counter to gates to aircraft. Solving, helping . Fun coworkers that make the job easy and fun.. Flights perks ! Being part of a global brand and representing them .

Delays, upset passengers. Fluctuating schedule between day and nights . Inconsistent management. Co workers who refuse to assist .
