Pros

Flexible, interesting demand management technology, headquartered in Boulder

Cons

The culture is creating equity issues. Promotions are not given based on merits and accomplishments, but based on if the executives like you. Often, who the executives like is based on who they hired at the company they worked for prior to the acquisitions, and they seem heavily skewed towards giving preferential treatment to men--many less qualified men were promoted instead of more qualified women. And many aggressive, sexist men were promoted instead of more balanced, experienced, compassionate men. The men that buy into this culture are condescending, rude, and inappropriate. Women are not given the same opportunities, compensation, promotions as men at Uplight. It was terrible to see all the women leaving as a result of this. I do not think this company is going to stay afloat. Even though there are some good people trying to shift the culture, I think it's too late--it's too deeply entrenched.

Pros

Uplight IS a company with: - Amazingly smart and passionate people. I will always be grateful for the people I've met during my time there. - Great work-life balance and benefits (unlimited PTO, Flex Fridays) Your work here will have a net-positive impact even when the company is dysfunctional and ineffective.

Cons

Uplight is NOT: - A product-led, and by extension, a customer-centric company - Executing on a long-term strategy, but rather governed by shiny objects, constant fire-fighting, and the relationships of senior leaders and executives - A company that has used the last three years to lay a foundation to accelerate growth in the industry - A company that has demonstrated its ability to learn from prior mistakes My time at Uplight felt like ground hog's day: reorg and redefinition of the strategy, hope, disappointment. Rinse and repeat. When Uplight first formed, it had an incredibly unique opportunity to create a new solution category in the utility customer experience space and become a first mover. The company was never able to take advantage of this opportunity because of inexperienced leaders, keeping bad leaders in place for too long, and always sacrificing long-term benefit for short-term gains. While I believe the new leadership changes will finally steer Uplight back onto the right path, it's too little too late to capitalize on the initial opportunity handed to the company's founders. I'm sure Uplight will grow into a fine company, but it had the potential to be much more.

Uplight has been growing very rapidly and we appreciate your feedback! Our teams have been working hard to thoughtfully work through change and growth internally. Unfortunately, the growing pains of our maturation at times can leave gaps. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention and we will look to see how to continue to improve our processes moving forward.

Pros

- After its inception, Uplight was gifted an insane opportunity to provide energy efficiency and climate-friendly software to the largest utilities in the world at a time when they are needed more than ever - Positioned better than any other company in the USA to solve multiple utility software needs - Hardworking staff that is committed to and believes in the broader mission (at least below the executive level) - Career development opportunities: it's a challenging place, and you will be challenged, and either grow from it or become broken inside... or both!

Cons

- The poorest Executive Management Team I have ever encountered in my entire life, whether through companies I've consulted for, evaluated to acquire, or worked directly for - Unbelievable disconnect between reality and projections that allow absolutely no possible way to meet investor/management/financial expectations - Post-M&A, fired too many people, refused to pay tech-debt and put revenue growth above all else, now in rinse-repeat cycle of overhiring to overcompensate and removing headcount when revenue doesn't hit - PrOdUcTs DoNt WoRk - No consideration for employee burnout, mental health, morale, etc. - DE&I task force was dismantled without explanation - Some of the worst employee option comp in the entire software industry - Fat, wealthy, paid-out execs are SPRINTING for the exit or being forced out - Easy to drown from being forced to drink too much Koolaid - Speaking to ANY of these issues gets you a bullseye on your back, watch out for knives
