I have been working at Optus full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There's a really strong sense of our own identity at Optus, as a challenger brand and particularly since we secured the rights to the English Premier League football. We're no longer just a Telco, we're now a Telco/ ICT/ Media company, as well as a challenger brand. The atmosphere on Campus has changed palpably, as our brand has. EPL, deals with National Geographic, brand Ambassadors like Usain Bolt and people like Idris Elba, Ricky Gervais and Cuba Gooding Jnr have all added to this. We're screening the Ashes and the FIFA 2018 Soccer World Cup. It's a brand and a direction to be proud of.

The Campus HQ in Macquarie Park is excellent and as a place to work, second to none. There are numerous onsite coffee shops, restaurants, food outlets, a gym (at extra cost), a childcare centre, a newsagents and dry cleaning service, as well as Onsite Doctors, Physios, Counsellors and MultiFaith room.

Optus also puts on free bus services from the Campus to Epping station and subsidised ones to Wynyard station.

We're a very culturally diverse business, very inclusive of people of all backgrounds, creeds, faiths and cultures. Gay Pride is celebrated, as is Eid and Diwali. The Optus NSW Christmas Party is something to behold and up there with the best parties created. Thousands of tickets, run like a professional mini festival with entertainment, free drinks all night, luxurious settings and great music. It sells out thousands of tickets in a matter of minutes every year!

Finally, our ever changing product and service portfolio is very exciting to work with whether it be Smartphones, Sports Media, Cyber Security or Cloud Services.

    Cons

We are very Sydney centric and many of our opportunities and events reflect this. Melbourne is also well catered for to a lesser extent but the rest of the states don't get as much attention.

We don't pay poorly but we could pay better relative to the market, especially in locations like Canberra and Sydney, which can make recruitment and retention challenging.

Whilst we pay bonus, it is linked to a performance review system that is rated via a bell curve system, relative to peers. My observations are that this is not a motivator or an enabler but something that demotivates employees. It's also very outdated and to the cynic in me, looks like a method used to control bonus spend. The performance review methodology probably need an overhaul.

The SingTel Group who own us are very different culturally and professionally. This offers us many great things support wise and sometimes direction wise but they do often make decisions about an Australian business, via a Singaporean lens. This can at times, prevent Optus from reaching its full potential as a company and make SingTel feel fundamentally disconnected from the reality on the ground in Australia.

    Advice to Management

Keep on doing what you're doing with the brand - more Sports, more Content, more new and dynamic technologies.
Keep on doing what you're doing on Campus in Macquaire Park.
Keep on making Optus the culturally diverse and inclusive, awesome place it is.

Overhaul the performance review system and include business/ industry experts in discussions when grading roles, so we remain competitive.

SingTel - allow Optus to run Optus day to day, month to month and you will reap the benefits. Managing an Australian company with a Singaporean mindset is a limiting our progress as a company.
