I have been working at Optus full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Where do I start? Are you a woman with a family? Optus is probably the best place in country to work. You get;
    1. Paid maternity leave
    2. Excellent childcare centre onsite
    3. Flexible working arrangements
    4. Option to work part time
    5. Bulk billed GP onsite
    6. Free parking for pregnant women
    7. Women are NOT overlooked for promotions/senior roles. There is NO "Boys club" at Optus. They reward skill/talent/personality/contribution/attitude.

    Other points;
    1. Optus does not discriminate. You see people of all races/religions/colours often in very SENIOR positions. They reward talent and skill
    2. Fairly generous bonus structure
    3. At the forefront of everything for a Telco
    4. Lots of professional development.

    Cons

    1. Expensive car parking
    2. Bad lunch options. (ie. dont buy lunch here - you'll go broke) The food is also disappointing. Think soggy sandwiches and old salads.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!

I have been working at Optus full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work/life balance and reasonble pay rates. Good benefits and well structured rewards scheme.
Reasonably modern campus with heaps of coffee shops and food options.

    Cons

Currently limited opportunity for further advancement due to constant restructures.
Short staffed, so everyone's utilisation is extremely high.
    Extremely silo'd organisation.
Difficult to get to office due to location

    Advice to Management

Optus' business units could work together so much better if the silo's were broken down.
Workload of both staff and management needs to be reviewed - management have no time to spend time with their staff (I had only 5 or 6 one on one's in 2 years!

I worked at Optus full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great work place environment with cafes, child care, gym. There are also many events like FiFA, Gold Coast commonwealth games. A lot different challenges for someone who likes variety. and renumeration wages are above market rates.

    Cons

Work overload and immediate management has zero power, failed to understand the priorities and work technicalities to decide what to do. A lot of finger pointing when things failed, or may be setup to fail.

    Advice to Management

Need to review the middle management. The bottom end is struggling to make both ends meet, or make the organisation flatter.

I have been working at Optus part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

All the people I met in retail role (manager, FT/PT co-workers) and even regional managers who come in to visit sometimes are very friendly, easy going people.
The culture is quite competitive but not stressful. KPIs are measured every single day and employee tallies are posted publicly every night, and store managers also under pressure to compete with each store in their level. Not a matter if you're good at what you do, which is selling.

    Cons

Incentives: I'm a casual employee but work almost 20-25 hours a week. I get a higher base rate but no paid leave or other employee benefits or incentives, whereas PT and FT get commission.
Growth in company: not much room to grow within the retail store or company. Been commended by co-workers, manager, regional manager several times about my high performance but no offers to advance despite this.

    Advice to Management

Give high performing workers more opportunities to advance to other sectors.

I have been working at Optus full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Work life balance for most are ok and necessities are all on campus. If you are in a well resourced team with budget to grow then you will enjoy going the extra mile.

Great place for graduates to kick start their career with rotations covering the whole business.

    Cons

There can be some challenging groups which is no fault on the individuals, but can lead to a draining and painful experience. In some ways the issue can be based on a heavy process which struggles to scale and also defeated by inter-group dynamics. Occasionally, only the most resilient survive these environments and the rest will leave or be “restructured”.

    Advice to Management

Management already know these issues and more from numerous surveys. Based on the DNA, the nature of the organisation can’t be altered that much.
