As part of our new leadership structure, reporting to the Manager of Development Services, in the role of Appeals and Compliance Manager you will be responsible for setting the strategic direction for appeals and compliance. You will lead governance frameworks, drive performance excellence, and ensure all compliance, appeals, and legal matters are handled consistently, efficiently, and in line with legislative requirements.
You’ll play a key role in safeguarding the integrity of development outcomes while balancing community expectations, industry needs, and statutory obligations.
Key responsibilities include:
Leadership & Performance – Lead and mentor multidisciplinary teams, fostering a high-performance culture, setting clear standards, and delivering consistent, high-quality compliance and appeals outcomes
Planning Directorate Leadership - Contribute to the establishment and modelling of a positive, values based culture as a key member of the Directorate leadership cohort supporting cross directorate priorities and outcomes
Strategy to Delivery – Set the strategic direction for compliance and appeals, translating legislative and policy requirements into practical frameworks, governance models, and efficient service delivery
Appeals & Risk Management – Develop and implement appeals strategies, assess legal, financial and reputational risks, and determine Council positions to achieve timely, lawful and defensible outcomes
Stakeholder Influence – Build and maintain strong relationships with Councillors, government agencies, industry, and the community; represent Council in legal forums including the Planning and Environment Court
Communication & Governance – Provide high-level advice and oversee the preparation of clear, defensible reports and recommendations, ensuring alignment with legislative, probity and governance requirements
Operational Excellence & Compliance – Drive consistency, quality and continuous improvement across compliance and appeals functions, ensuring alignment with statutory, safety and organisational obligations, while building workforce capability
