About the Role
The Platform Engineer is a core delivery contributor in the Infrastructure team. You implement platform capabilities - cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, observability tooling, and self-service catalogue components - working within established designs and collaborating closely with senior engineers to resolve ambiguity and grow your technical depth.
You are not just an executor. You bring curiosity and a problem-solving mindset to your work, noticing what is broken or inefficient, surfacing ideas, and contributing to a team culture of continuous improvement. You apply SRE principles in your day-to-day delivery, use AI tooling to accelerate your work, and take genuine ownership of the reliability and quality of what you build.
Role Responsibilities
Platform Implementation & Delivery
-
Implement platform components and infrastructure changes within your assigned domain, working from designs produced collaboratively with senior engineers.
- Collaborate with other engineers to resolve ambiguity in requirements, raise questions early, and ensure your implementation aligns with agreed design intent.
- Understanding of Cloud frameworks – Cloud Adoption Framework, Well-Architected Framework.
- Follow and reinforce IaC, GitOps, and CI/CD standards; contribute self-service catalogue entries and pipeline templates that other teams can reliably consume working towards a self-serving Internal Developer Portal solution.
- Write clean, well-tested, peer-reviewed infrastructure code; produce clear documentation so others can operate and extend what you build.
Site Reliability Engineering Mindset
-
Apply SRE principles in your delivery work: understand the SLIs and SLOs for your domain, contribute to their implementation, and use reliability signals to prioritise your work.
- Identify and reduce toil in your area — manual processes, gaps in automation, repeated operational steps - and deliver durable fixes rather than workarounds.
- Participate in the on-call rotation; respond to and escalate incidents appropriately, and contribute actively to post-incident reviews with observations and improvement ideas.
- Maintain observability for platform components you own - metrics, logs, alerts — in line with team SLO standards.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
-
Identify problems in platform reliability, developer experience, and operational efficiency from your day-to-day work; surface these to the team with context and initial ideas.
- Bring ideas on tooling, automation, and process improvements; contribute to team discussions on how to work better and build more reliably.
- Stay curious about emerging practices in platform engineering and SRE; share relevant findings with the team.
AI-Augmented Delivery
-
Use AI tooling actively across your development and delivery work - code generation, documentation, debugging, and incident troubleshooting - to improve the quality and pace of your output.
- Share effective AI-augmented techniques with teammates; contribute to the team’s growing understanding of where AI tooling adds genuine value.
Collaboration & Growth
-
Work closely with senior engineers and your EM to understand priorities, seek design guidance, and continuously improve the scope and quality of your contributions.
- Engage with value stream engineers to understand how they use platform components; surface friction and usability observations back to the team.
- Participate actively in code and design reviews - as a reviewer and reviewee; treat feedback as a primary mechanism for growth.
- Contribute to team knowledge: update runbooks and documentation, and share learnings from delivery and incident work.
Desired Skills and Experience
-
Practical experience with cloud infrastructure (Azure preferred), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or equivalent), container orchestration (Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines in a production environment.
- Working knowledge of SRE principles: SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, toil, and reliability-driven prioritisation — in practice, not just theory.
- Good operational instincts: on-call participation, observability tooling (Grafana, Prometheus, or equivalent), and learning from production systems.
- Solid engineering fundamentals: writes clean, version-controlled code; follows review processes; produces clear documentation.
- Active user of AI development tooling with an interest in applying it to platform and operations work.
- Collaborative and growth-oriented: surfaces problems and ideas readily, seeks feedback, and is motivated to expand technical depth and breadth. Experience in regulated environments is a plus.
